Last weekend in a Hertz office, the ladies there asked politely for my autograph. I had a pretty good idea why, but was somewhat surprised as this has not happened to me for a number of years. When I asked them why they'd like my autograph, they replied "aren't you that cricketer"?

Let me say, cricket in my eyes, rates right up there with watching paint dry, so I was able to have a chuckle and assure them that no, I was not "that cricketer".

The reason I get this occasionally, is that I share a surname with a now retired cricketer, I'm a similar age, similar build (in fact his stocky build gave him his nickname) and some used to say I do look like him (although I don't see any resemblance myself). Frequently I use to hear, "your brother is in strife again with that Botham guy" so most people assumed I was his brother rather than him, but occasionally I would be asked for an autograph.

Simple logic, same surname, build, age.....must be him or must be related to him. (neither is true in my case)

How many others have had this happen?

Some people thought I was Hinch or Hunch when I was a bit younger. My hair started to grey up and I did not use Grecian2000 to keep up appearances.

People occasionally used to mistake me for peter hellier. Yeah there was some similarity.

When I was bit younger people thought i was Bert Newton, size is right :).

Mr Pushka was frequently confused with a well known SA footballer. People regularly had a chat with him about the team. Lots of coincidences though as he actually knew the SA football player as Mr Pushka was a state cricket player. And the confusion was reversed. And yes, same age, look, build etc as they were both very fit.

we were in melb and my husband was mistaken for Ben Dark from Getaway. The ladies next to you would not believe it wasn't so in the end we played along. Funny thing was my hubby didn't have a clue who Ben Dark was .

Botham has a feud with Chappell but he isn't portly?

Not me. My grandfather was mistaken for William Holden a lot. He got to meet the man when they were both staying in the same hotel in Singapore one time.

My brother in law got around using a current port Adelaide player's drivers licence for a while. We even had a taxi driver turn up one night to pick up said player from our house. It was actually the BiL, who had passed out by this stage and wasn't going anywhere.

My cousin used to get girls following him around thinking he was Dale Thomas.

In Greece I was the director of the film Shirley Valentine.
The best though was when returning to Maitland several years after I had moved to QLD.A fellow came up to me and said "didn't you used to be Drron?"

Some people expect me to be their saviour!

Does that count? ;)

In the US I was asked to pose for pictures and sign an autograph. Apparently I was In the TV show Entourage. Given I have never seen the TV show before I was and still am clueless.

I am just "that guy" who people seem to think they know. No one in particular but a lot of people look at me with recognition in their eyes - I think I must just look like someone "that they used to know". I have been bailed up many times by people asking me if I am somebody or other (not famous). I must have distant relatives who look similar as twice people have thought I was somebody with the same surname!
