Does this count as a double op-up? :)

Booked onto QF108 LAX-SYD a few weeks ago, and was instantly allocated 37K (a Premium Economy seat). I figured this was a Premium Economy seat with Economy service, as the seatmap showed this section of the plane as "Economy".

On check-in I asked if a colleague could be moved into my row, but was told "You've been upgraded to Premium Economy and your colleague is in Economy." Hmm, maybe I am going to get the full PE service I thought?

Though I didn't get a chance to find out, because at the gate my pass beeped, I was asked to stand aside for a minute, and given an op-up to J! :D

(Colleague wasn't happy as she'd put in a points request earlier and been denied.)

Thanks QF! My second J op-up LAX-SYD. :D

Cheers,
- Febs.

If there was Premium Economy, then it seems to be 2 involuntary upgrades that occurred, so technically not a double upgrade , but nice none the less :)

Did the 1st boarding pass say "Premium" or "Economy" ; if the latter then it was just a single one class involuntary upgrade

What seat number was on the BP that beeped?

37K - the seat I was originally allocated weeks ago. Pretty sure it said "Economy".

My understanding is that Qantas sell a number of Premium Economy seats as Economy seats (with Economy service), and allocate these weeks in advance to Gold and Plat FF's. I know my mate (Gold) has had many PE seats with Economy service.

Qantas referred to this section (rows 36-39) as Economy on the seatmap I looked at (despite them definitely being PE seats), so that would be consistent with the above too.

If it said economy then it seems that you received a single class involuntary upgrade then; still can be nice to have on a long flight :)

To be honest, it was a bit of a rhetorical question. ;) Whether or not it's technically a double op-up, the fact is I paid for an economy seat (discount economy, too), was given a PE seat, then given a Business seat (with business service). :)

You're right though - very nice to have. I had a big party to attend the night I got back and wasn't jetlagged at all. :)

If your 37K BP simply indicated "Economy" then am thinking the check-in agent was incorrect; merely assuming 37K indicated an "op-up" whereas it was simply the seat, not the service.

In this case you did indeed get a "double upgrade" as a single upgrade would have had your new (post Beep) BP showing "Premium Economy".

Congratulations Febs, but this is the bit that I can't understand:

(Colleague wasn't happy as she'd put in a points request earlier and been denied.)

Does anyone who understands the "science" of these things know why QF would not have upgraded Febs' colleague instead, as she had requested to burn points for the seat?

I guess it's the delicate balance between not losing out on too much revenue vs keeping the most frequent flyers (i.e. those who send the most business to QF) happy.

My colleague's a Bronze and only got her request in 3 days beforehand, so it was pretty unlikely. Anything could have happened at the last minute (no-shows, oversold in Y etc..) to make a J seat available for me.

Cheers,

I managed to score an upgrade on SFO-SYD in October. Was booked in 36, Y+ hard product with Y soft product. At SYD QP I asked about moving to the bulk head to which I was told "oh im sorry sir but you've already been upgraded' and was printed off BP's for J hard product with Y+ service. I was SG, my mate was QP NB. Can't complain at that (I even took the middle seat to keep him happy after I nearly destroyed his laptop in an unfortunate champagne-related incident in the QP beforehand ) :D

I wonder what my chances of Op-Up I have a flight in the next couple of days MEL-SYD, booked in L Class and according to Qantas website and seatcounter, all booking classes even 'Y' are full except for: D,I & J (Business Class) which as some seats left.

Checked in using OLCI, was allocated row 24 (23 is showing as blocked).

Here's hoping for an OP-UP to J.

As a QP NB you're a long way down in the pecking order. WP/SG/PS and OW Elites will be in line in front of you unfortunately.

I'm hoping for an op-up on my ADL-MEL flight today. Y0 and J4 still showing on a 738. Here's hoping for my first beep-at-the-gate (tis the season for it).

That's what I presumed, but stranger things have happened, and no-one on here really knows the formula QF applies to Op-ups, except that status probably plays a big part in it. Also my fare is not a cheapy, its an upgradeable fare, so hopefully they will go on my spend level too which is quite high, 4 flights in the last 5 days for example.

However I am rapidly approaching Silver and my aim is to be Gold by April.

Lets see! Good luck with your flight tomorrow drewbles!

Good luck guys!

cmon0005 - You're certainly not wrong about op-ups being an unknown science. I've seen NBs being op-upped (during OLCI no less) ahead of SGs (I was one of the SGs  ), and I know a girl who gets op-upped all the time, regardless of airline, despite having no status with any of them! Very lucky.

Cheers,
- Febs.

ditto (didn't mean to sound elitist or pessimistic!). Boarding in 20 minutes, so let's hope (still showing Y0 and J4).

I'm still hoping I'll get one of these magical op-ups some day :(

"Someday Donna!"

It'll happen. Tis' the right time of year for it, although i'm fully expecting to be stuck in 4C for the ADL-MEL flight (and have already consumed sufficient beverages for that).

The upgrade gods were with me today. Beep on boarding and at-gate opup. Alas there was an equipment change from a 738 to 734, but it's much nicer than being down back :)
