well, it's a first for me seeing QF offering different minimum price between the same pair of cities

Adelaide to Sydney is the Sydney Deal from $179

Sydney to Adelaide is the Adelaide Deal from $159 (granted this fare is for only as few days in July (19th-22nd) and the fare in the other direction for the same days is $219)

its not something I would ordinarily expect given traffic on any city pairing could be expected to be pre-dominantly "a return ticket" where prior expectations is that you would be able to find the same fare both ways/

did make me think this was unusual, perhaps a one-off rather than a new way of dynamic fare pricing?

It could have been that the ADL-SYD sale fare hadn't been loaded yet when you were looking, but the other direction had? A sale started at midnight.
