A few times I've flown when there's been a Test cricket match on and they've set a channel on the IFE to take the broadcast. I can recall it back in the series in India where Australia won for the first time in decades. That was the first time - about 4-5 years ago and I've had it couple of times since. Flew MEL-SYD today with the Test on but got nothing. Channel 2 on the IFE had this horrible Morse beeping sound though.

Just wondering what their policy was with radio. The first time I heard it the captain announced we could listen to it (DRW-ADL flight I recall) but it faded away about halfway through the flight and they didn't re-tune it so probably weren't listening to it.

Anyone else listened in on radio in the air? Don't just write that you hate cricket, we know we are not to convert you!

About a year ago I was flying while a reasonably exciting match was on (and I'm not a great cricket fan by any means). The signal started to fade out as we got about half way to our destination so I asked the FA if they could request the flight deck crew to retune to another frequency (specifically that for our destination).

It may have helped that I was in J but the FA got straight on the intercom and it was soon changed. Quite an enjoyable flight as I recall - a good meal, attentive service and a good cricket result.

Richard.

o/t slightly as it doesnt relate to cricket.

After a LONG day at Randwick races, I took the 7pm SYDMEL on a QF 737-400 with the old dial in Y for IFE.

One of the channels on the radio was the ABC feed. It had ABC NSW, a Super 14 match. Not the biggest fan but I decided to listen.
As we flew over Albury, it changed to ABC Victoria and Much to my delight :D a close and exciting AFL match was broadcast IN the cabin!!!

Was a most enjoyable (although loud) flight, the FA was just smiling.

:p

Always liked Ansett as ABC radio was part of the offered choices, and most of the time there was no problem with the tuning. Good to listen to in the morning for news and current affairs.

i always find it hard to hear, why cant it be clear?

I generally find the IFE on QF very ordinary which is why I choose to tune into the ABC, much more informative and entertaining, IMO. However, because the bulk of my flights are in and out of PER the ABC reception available in the less inhabited parts of the country is limited and generally of poor quality. I suggest that this maybe the cause of your problem. I agree it's such a treat to be able to stay tuned to the cricket or footy when it's in action. Has anyone flown DJ with the IFE that you pay for to watch TV? can you get live sport?

Yep, and it makes QF IFE look pretty average. Fox Sports 1, 2, and 3 live in flight and Fox Sports News (among 24 channels). Great for live games during footy season. Not so good for domestic test cricket as it doesn't show 7, 9, 10 but great for overseas matches - although FSN has scores and highlights.

For my longer flights (MEL-BNE, MEL-PER) i have been known to take a look at the footy schedule and try and time the flight to a game that's on. A good way to kill the time aloft.

ABC radio should be available on most Qantas domestic mainline services on channel 2, certainly the Airbii and 737's.

I does require Aircrew intervention to retune as the aircraft moves between regions.

I have often left BNE listening to NRL, had it fuzzy over central NSW and arrived into MEL listening to AFL.

Earlier this year, my Friday 7:30pm MEL-AKL flight was operated by a Domestic 73H and I was able to listen to the AFL all the way until we commenced our descent into AKL (It did get a bit fuzzy towards the end however).

One of the reasons I enjoy flying DJ is that I can tune in to Fox Sports and watch the footy or something similar. I remember flying from MEL to Perth one time and watched a horror show unfold before my eye when my beloved (and rather pathetic) Tigers got walloped by Geelong by 171 points. I can't recall how many cans I had to consume to dull the pain.

I was at that game. A very long story but it was the day i became a Tigers fan (i'm ex NSW). I'm one of the few Tigers fans who can say things have improved since i first started following them - sadly not by much.

You're not the guy who went on ABC radio to find a club and posted on BigFooty?

That would be the very long story.
Small world. I was one of the posters on BF that actively encouraged you to barrack for us. For that, my friend, I owe you an apology.

And a refund on two seasons worth of season tickets! But i'm in this for a lifetime not a goodtime - it will be all the sweeter when things do turn around. My grandkids may or may not be there to see it.

This thread may have slipped majorly off topic i'm afraid!

I can well imagine some passengers listening yesterday as the last session began with the match in the balance. It would have faded out and they would have been on their mobiles as soon as they landed to get the final score from PocketNews or the web!

Slightly OT (not talking AFL though) - flew Virgin America LAX-SEA a couple of months back and they had pay TV in the back of every seat BUT there was also a lot of free stuff as well - only certain shows and movies you had to pay, there was a lot of normal (if that can be said of anything American) TV. Another feature was the menu channel! Helped me pick the free drinks!
So if you're flying domestic in the US think of Virgin. I wouldn't contemplate DJ here for longer than 1.5 hour flights but Virgin America was a pleasure.

Anyway now it's back to the cricket...
