Door ripped off Cathay plane as Hong Kong air bridge collapses | News.com.au

"AN air bridge has reportedly collapsed at Hong Kong's airport ripping the door from a Cathay Pacific plane and injuring at least one person. The L2 air bridge at Gate 71 collapsed just after boarding, injuring the bridge operator.

Reports say Cathay Pacific Flight 532, an Airbus A330, was starting to push back when the bridge collapsed and fell to the ground. The falling bridge ripped the door off of the jet.

"Thank god they finished boarding when the accident happened," JALPak wrote on Flyer talk, an online pilot forum.

According to Flyer talk, the Cathay flight has been delayed until tomorrow. Hong Kong Airport Authority has asked airlines to use single air bridge operation for the time being.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]I wouldn't think the aircraft was pushing back with the door open.....I doubt the door could be ripped off pushing back with it closed either. More filler from News?

It can definitely do damage, and has happened before.
There was an AA 777 that had damage due to a similar incident

I'm not doubting it will do damage...what I think is more likely is the bridge collapsed with the door open (ie the aircraft not pushing back, but stationary).....

I'm no expert, but i imagine the door would not be likely to be ripped off if the door was closed. The no News article was suggesting the aircraft was being pushed back when it happened. My thoughts are that it could not (or be so unlikely) have ripped a closed door off, the aircraft was stationary and the door open.

Seems to me to be more poor journalism....

So that's what that button does !:shock:

Looks like the Y Bridge was being drawn back, collapsed and hit the J Bridge which was still attached. Looking at the pics it doesn't appear to have been due to any structural failure of the y bridge itself. Perhaps was operator error in reversing and not having the wheels aligned? I'd be surprised if the control system allowed that to happen.

Or the operator crashed the Y bridge into the J bridge causing the great catastrophe. Will be interested to see if it is all fixed by late next week when I'm in HKG.

Imagine the pax when told "we cant leave because the door has been ripped off - wonder how they were de-planed? Would you roll stairs up to the right front, the left rear, or tow the plane to another gate and the the doorless left front?

Shocking photo - what a mess!
