Well that explains the big announcement the industry here was hanging out for. Everyone was kind of hoping it would have been a massive refurbishment of the Parmelia Hilton or the opening of a second Hilton property in the CBD.

Hopes, dashed.

I just looked up Karratha on Wotif and the cheapest accommodation going is a $200 for a three star motel on the weekends. I can only imagine Doubletree would be charging quite a lot more than that.

Indeed, I recently priced it up, and I couldn't get a "mo/hotel" night for less than about $300... Interesting place to visit, just not to stay IMHO. And the DT will charge upwards of $350 I suspect.

I might be going for work but doubt they would put me up at the DT when it opens though.

smart, as long as the beer is a never ending supply they can just about name their price

And I was actually thinking of visiting Karratha at some point in time.

But I was actually hoping to be on the next plane out. ;)

It's my understanding, Karratha has a hotel occupancy of greater than 100% - it's full, there are the odd no-shows that are charged, and then walk-ins come in begging for a room and you resell the no-show rooms. It wouldn't matter what they charged - they'll still get people there.

The other thing that is good is that they're now launching brands from the Hilton group other than Hilton Hotels now. This is positive - maybe mattress runs will be easier here in the future.

So is this what they're building now opposite the Best Western Karratha at the moment?

On the back of the DoubleTree announcement, Hilton has confirmed its eyeing off further expansion in Australia, including interest in a second Perth property. Perhaps the Novotel Langley could be converted to a Hilton (or DoubleTree).

I remember someone commenting that they found the newer Hiltons a little too "cookie cutter" for their tastes. I ignored that at the time, but given the discussion that they had in that article (about most of the hotel being imported pre-fabricated and slotted on top of the foundations), I'm starting to re-evaluate that.

I would hope that if anything happens in Perth, that it results in a new build. What Perth needs is more hotels, not shuffling the name plates around.
