I did a quick search but could not find anyone else who had started this.

News of a drone that may have collided recently with a BA aircraft has been widely reported.

This may be like asking 'how long is a piece of string' (so apologies) but how much does a typical drone weigh (one that is flown by enthusiasts, or which Australia Post might use in future to deliver parcels.)

Would the effect of one colliding with say a B738 or larger B773ER be minimal given the disparity in weight? Would it have any effect at all, or would it be analogous to an elephant being attacked by a mosquito?

I'd imagine it would do some serious damage going through an engine.

Something like this weighs in at around 1216 grams, I think that is without the camera. Certainly would stuff an engine and that most probably wouldn't be good on a windscreen of something going 2-4 hundred KPH.

Was trying to download a photo but too hard for my simple brain

I asked a pilot friend yesterday who flies 146s out of London City Airport. I asked if they were too small to do damage and he responded with 'Oh gosh no--it could do some very serious damage, that's the problem with them. There was some footage a few weeks back of a Southwest airplane hitting one of these things after take-off and it sliced half the winglet off. So yeah-they're becoming a real menace. If it's not clowns with drones trying to take us out its cough with lasers deliberately trying to blind us.'

That video was faked.

This is very much how much a 'how long is a piece of string?' question.

There are many places that hitting an airliner would cause considerable damage and many places that would cause, effectively, no problems.

Not much else to say really.

Sorry, forget about the good and bad places for a drone (or anything for that matter) to hit an aircraft....they just shouldn't be there. Any infringements must be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law and then make some more laws.
