Heading back home to SYD via DRW later this week from PER. Mrs 8803 always has a reason for avoiding DRW, so given I need to be back a day earlier than SWMBO for work, thought I'd take the scenic route. Apart from North Queensland, DRW is the only other major location in Oz I haven't been to (only got to see ADL bcs Rex flight to BHQ delayed 8 hours)...

For inbound & outbound flights, are A or K seats recommended for the scenery (73H scheduled for both flights)? One potential obstacle is the weather - BOM site shows "Monsoonal showers/storms" in DRW for the next week.

Many thanks!

Dont think A or K will make much difference, its wet season!

Just curious, why? I know you haven't been here but if she hasn't how does she know she won't like it? The only bunch I know that dislike DRW before they've been here are Army wives.

More than likely you'll land on RW29 which would mean the city will be on your left (A seat) when you land. You'll get good views of green wetlands and billabongs & most likely East Alligator & Adelaide Rivers regardless of being on the left or right hand side of the plane. Robertson Army Barracks will be on your right.

If it's gusting a tail wind and you have to land on RW11 it depends on your final approach. A right base turn for RW11 may see you track over the Channel Island power station with the city on your right which is quite a nice view when it's sunny. Out the left hand side you would look up towards Fannie Bay, East Point, Nightcliff etc.

A left base turn for RW11 (probably slightly less frequent) track over Lee Point, Casuarina Beach, Nightcliff out the left hand side of the aircraft then turning final on the right hand side you would look further down the coast towards East Point, Fannie Bay, Cullen Bay and the city.

Given that it's the wet season it's really in the lap of the Gods - I'd just take pot luck and leave it to chance re the seating as the minute you change something you later wish you hadn't messed with it.

Or as Mrs Doubtfire put it "hope for the best, expect the worst and take whatever comes".

Cheers Oz

Wrong direction to see anything overly special (except for a lot of outback). DRW - East Coast flys very inland (much to my disappointment)
