Hi folks,
SWMBO and I will be visiting Dubrovnik, Croatia In peak season this year ( early July) and was wondering if any members have any recommendations for places to stay.

Dubrovnik appears to have a combination of hotels and self catering apartments from a few basic searches I've conpleted so far.

I ask this question as i understand whilst plenty of availability exists now, no doubt it will dry up closer to the time.
We were also wondering if it's worthwhile staying in the old town centre or further out of town where a cluster of accommodation appears to be available In the headland near Park Suma ?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

We are also contemplating Dubrovnik same time - but really want to be on the water somewhere - so as CCP says any tips will be greatly appreciated.

I guess the answer to this depends on how long you are there for and what you intend to do while there, e.g. do you intend to visit anywhere else using a car. The town centre is undoubtedly where things are at if you are only interested in that and it's undoubtedly very atmospheric. The downsides would be

1. In July its very busy, i.e. it can be noisy though this dies down very quickly once you get off the main drag
2. Its car free. While this might seem like an advantage the disadvantage is that you will quite possibly have to lug your bag a fair distance to get to any accommodation, particularly if in the preferred off the main drag locations.
3. No parking
4. Considerably more expensive
5. Possibly noisy

We stayed in a place near the Hotel Bellevue, only 15 minutes walk (or 5 by bus) and importantly (or at least for us), near a lovely beach. Good beaches are actually in fairly short supply so investigate closely if its really what we would describe as a beach. Its more common here to sunbathe on rocks/concrete than have sandy beaches, though jumping off those rocks into the ocean has its own charm. The beach below Bellevue was fairly quiet too, some can get EXTREMELY busy.

I stayed at the Hilton just a month or so ago in low season. Staff there are great (one bar staffer kept giving me free drinks, the breakfast buffet it good and the rooms are comfy). It's also in an ideal spot being about 50m from the Old town entrance.

While I did a lot of walking around Dubrovnik (I walked over 10km), apart from a few touristy things around the lake, the main focus point was definately the old town.

Great views raised so far..... Thanks for your input.
We didn't plan to hire a car, although I here the road to Split is quite scenic.

We are flying into and out of DBV airport..... I imagine the airport to be quite small, although if anyone has any knowledge of access to the airport and General Amenities please feel free to share :)

We drove to the nearby town of Cavtat which was very picturesque for dinner and next day into Montenegro to visit Kotor, a very worthy destination and only required us to hire a car for a day but depends on how long you are there.

We will be in Dubrovnik for three nights only, although we are certainly ready and waiting to take Im as much as possible in the time we have their.

You might want to consider Apartment Ragusa. Its basically quaint apartments in old building within the town wall so its a short walk anywhere. Stayed there in apartment 10 which sleeps up to 5 about 5 years ago (back then was $255/night). Recommend it for feeling like you live in the town. Otherwise the only time I ever used a travel agent (and found it worked well) was Discover Croatia Holidays (which gave good suggestions for each place we stayed in Croatia -except for one new place which they did warn us that they weren't familiar with). We're going again in July and will probably do same...

Dubrovnik is a great place to visit, but quite frankly, given the rip-off prices in the historic town and the crowds there (despite it being off-season), we were happy to be out of the place at each day's end.

So back in early October last year, we stayed at Apartments Radic in Lapad - where there is a 10 minute bus trip to the main Dubrovnik gate departing every ten minutes. I picked the place because it had car-parking for my hire car, but we wound up in a huge apartment, with everything in it, and within short walking distance of the Lapad Promenade - a lively place where we did all our dining - and were extremely pleased. It was off-peak, so the apartment only cost us 44 Euros a night. The people who we booked the apartment with, also helped organise our day tours, one into Mostar in Bosnia, and the other into Montenegro visiting Budva and Kotor.

Regards,
Renato

P.S. - When wandering around Dubrovnik and you get peckish, you can either sit down and buy an expensive sit down meal (ours was very average) or you can go to the Mlnar shop which is just down from the main gate. Buy their sausage rolls ( which are hot dogs wrapped in pastry) or their potato rolls (long pastry filled with potato), and your hunger will be satisfied at minimal cost. Mlnar is a German bakery chain which I became very fond of in Munich, and which seems to pop-up wherever Germans tend to frequent.

Instead of staying in Dubrovnik we took an island hopping cruise on 40 pax MV President, best holiday we've ever had, visited many islands, price included many tours and most meals, drinks with dinner, drank copious amounts of fluid with 4 Aussies we met on board, never laughed so much, was all hilarious. Booked cruise with DiscoverCroatia in OZ.

Was back in Croatia Sept/Oct last in Split and found Zagreb fantastic, booked all accom. via villias.com (part of booking.com)
