If using just QFF points (plus pay taxes) to purchase an award flight say SYD/LAX/SYD in J do I receive status points?, or is it only any award seat etc. that get these?.

My understanding is that if you purchase the flight as a Classic Award you don't, but if you use points towards an Any Seat Award or Points + Pay you will receive points/SC. :)

Not what I thought.

If you can get a classic award, chances are you can get an any seat award for almost the same poitns/$$$, so which do you choose, no brainer really!

One thing that makes finding a cheap ASA a bit more difficult is that the classic award availability includes the extra SG allowance, but many of the equivalent flights only have ASA's at the higher prices. Generally, log in as my wife to check NB availability, but there is a possibility that both my wife and daughter will make SG this year, so even that mechanism will be denied me.

Is there any other way to know which are ordinary classics and which are bonus classics?

Certainly *ASA's come from the NB 'buckets'.

I have found that if Expertflyer shows P/U/Z/X availability for a flight then a JASA can be obtained at near classic award rates.
