Can anyone give recommendations for a hotel on Easter Island? Hopefully mid-range quality (as in not a family hotel), but I think its going to be expensive anyway.

Also, for a day there, what's the best way to see the statues etc? Any recommended tour guides?

We stayed at the Hotel Puku Vai, it was nice and would recommend it. They arranged a private tour for us with a Rapa Nui local (I think her name was Natalie - she was great). Tour was about $250ish from memory. They also arranged car hire for us, about $80/day. We did the private tour one day, then got a car for the next 2 days and went back to some of the sites on our own.

It's an expensive place to visit but really once in a lifetime so worth it imo.

Very much appreciated mrs.dr.ron, but at USD$3,700 for 2 nights for 2 people I think its a 'pass' (notwithstanding its meals, bar and tours included).

For 1 person it drops to USD$2,400 for 2 nights. Hmmm .. so the cost of food, drink and tours for a person they price at about USD$750/day.

Yes, I just looked at that too !! I don't think we will be staying there either  When are you going ??

Phwoar! Looks like Rapa Nui has gone upmarket big-time since I was there about 10 years ago. It was pretty low-key then.

Make sure to read this before you go: Collapse : Jared Diamond : 9780241958681

I was fortunate enough on the way out from SCL to sit next to the anthropologist who had done a lot of work on Rapa Nui and who Diamond consulted when writing the book.

Early March next year.

March 4th to 9th by any chance?

This is where we will be staying, Morerava Cottages in Easter Island

Hotels seem to be either very expensive for the only nice thing in town or very home/backyard/downtrodden motel like average. I picked the above because it seem more open air as some of the local bungalows look very cluttered or musty/old'ish

Edit: If you are there on the same dates, could this be the most remote AFF'er get together ever?

Looking at restaurants this one seems a must-
https://izakayakotaro.blogspot.com.au/

A great list to not eat there according to the owner-
[h=2]Reasons for not eat at kotaro[/h]
- The dishes take a long time to get ready

- Reservation required

- Sunday bookings only

- The Music sound very loud

- The sence of humor of the owner is strange

- Some people say is a very expensive restaurant

- The cook is a ego maniac

- No avocado or cream cheese or fried roll or gyoza or anything you can find in a delivery

- We do not make deliveries

- The chef is very ironic, aggressive and confrontational

- There is no sushi and sashimi or tuna every day of the year

- We do not serve children
nothing personal so there is no need to react rudely or go crazy it's, please do not make a drama nothing personal)

We ate at Kotaro, it was quite nice but honestly not outstanding. Very limited menu (basically whatever he's cooking that day). By all means go to it (your options aren't vast in a place like Easter Island) but just don't expect too much :)

There was a seafood place on the coast that was great - Tataku Vave. We went there twice.

I like these two rules
