Hi I am flying to LA with 3 other adults and we r flying economy we also have 2 children with us 2 yrs and 3 years we have a direct flight from Brisbane, just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to manage this trip as it is so long and my ankles are prone to swelling even on short flights. Hopefully the children will sleep and us to . Any info would be appreciated thks Bidbev.

If you are aware that your ankles swell on long haul flight, make sure you wear the compression stocking. In saying that, I think everyones ankles might swell slightly. I know my shoes have been tighter when I put them back on after a long haul flight.

Depending on the age of the kids, make sure they get a good nights sleep the night prior to your flight and don't think that if you tire them out they will sleep. It seems to work better the other way around.

Quite normal but I would consult a travel doctor, I am sure there are some good ones in BNE.

I always take aspirin three days beforehand to lessen the risk of DVT etc etc

plenty of toys, story books, colouring in material, favourite snacks etc.. would be handy if you had some portable dvd player/laptop that you could bring along with their favourite movies/cartoons in case there is nothing suitable on the plane...

also depending on what day you are travelling it might not be as full, not sure about on that route but get on as soon as you can and see what the seating looks like, u might be able to get two of the middle rows with a spare seat or two for a bit more room...

a bit of aspirin to thin the blood or whatever it does might help, probably material on the web as well giving advice or see your GP about swelling...

Economy to LA was the reason I vowed never to fly long-haul economy ever again

When my youngest 2 were toddlers I would dress them up as Princesses for a long haul flight, jewels and dresses . They loved it and behaved very well. I also kept a bag of $2 novelty toys, treats etc as a reward for good behaviour.
In regard to ankle swelling, if you are lucky enough to get a bulkhead or even just a window seat you can put your feet up on it. Flight socks are great and doing regular foot / knee exercises en-route is also a reasonable preventative.
Enjoy ;)

This one time I took my shoes off for most of the flight and then couldn't wear them again when we disembarked. Hardly ever take my shoes off on the flight for long periods of time now.

Oh and I hate compression socks with a passion. Never again.

Not the old foot on the bulkhead argument again :!:
I was going to say something but thought I had best stay out of that argument! ;)
