In a similar move to VA, EK appear to be introducing an advanced seat selection fee for Y passengers on lower Y class fares and with no status. If implemented, I assume the QF codeshares may also possibly be affected in the future. Seat selection at check in will still be free.

Charges are up to USD40 per sector (Australia to DXB for example).

I think there's pressure of shareholders on management and then management motivated by bonuses.

Emirates seat selection fee

Just saw a press article announcing that Emirates will start charging $40 to select a seat on discount Y fares. My wife and I like Emirates and also enjoy breaking the trip in Dubai, but if it is going to cost $320 extra to select seats I think we will use Singapore on future Europe trips.

Re: Emirates seat selection fee

I think a lot of people will think twice now before booking. It only affects spevial and saver fares but it's the sentiment that's wrong. Why pay for something if it's always been free before.
Usually seat selection fees are for low cost airlines, not a high quality airline like emirates. Maybe emirates are wanting to change their branding and become a low cost airline?!

Qantas and many other legacy airlines charge for seat selection for non status customers, so guess they are an LCC too? Charges are only made if seat selection is done prior to online check in opens. At this stage seat selection is still free.

I do agree that seat selection should be free at any time for any passenger on any airline.

BA charge for advanced seat selection in J for non status passengers. Now that is borderline criminal if you have forked out big money for a revenue J fare and then asked to pay more to just to select a J seat (particularly with the awful middle seats in club world).

Like checked bag charges, I would say seat selection charges will start to become more common amongst full service carriers over the next few years. Even QF did it for a while.
