Electronic Devices order getting earlier?

Is it just me, or is the order to switch of electronic devices before landing coming earlier and earlier?

Now that all my books are on iPad, once the order is given I have nothing to do. This was fine when it used to be 10 minutes, but on my most recent domestic flights it has been at least 25 minutes and the last few international flights it has been closer to 40 minutes. :shock:

Anybody else noticed this trend?

Let's not even go there as to whether they actually NEED to tell us to switch off electronic devices, especially those in Flight Mode.
 
It used to be when descent started and very recently it has changed to when they announce "prepare the cabin for landing" (for which I take credit as I raised in a thread here).

So in fact I think you might find this time will be getting later very shortly.

It is an annoyance for me as well. I now have to take a book on the flight to read when PEDs are off :(
 
I think it varies, depends which routes you fly and how quickly they start their descent to the airport. Some flights I’ve been on start a lot earlier than others, but some almost give the command at the last minute.

Have you tried pacing yourself through the in-flight magazines, assuming you know how many other flights you’ll spend onboard with the same magazine? :p

I can normally read the QF magazine before take off...

Or you could sit there and listen to some music or comedy (Bill Cosby at the dentist is extremely funny) or you can stare at the flight path or sit there and simply stare at the bulkhead.

Why do people feel they need to be occupied with devices/gadgets for every waking moment of their day?

Perhaps a few ADHD pills will help pass the 10 minutes between push-back and cruise :p

Take off is not so bad (unless we get stuck on the tarmac - which has happened numerous times). I guess when I fly I have normally been in back to back meetings squeezing every last second for for information or action - sitting on the aircraft with nothing to do is a real counter to that and I don't adjust well to that.

Sometimes I actually find it interesting!!

I do too - the restaurant section especially now - I have used a few of the recommendations.
 
Turning the electronics off, and putting things away is associated with the "Cabin crew, prepare the cabin for landing PA". Whilst that PA is nominally given at 20,000 ft on descent, the pilots can give that PA at any point if they expect turbulence or lots of weather on the descent.

I usually put my head back, close my eyes and relax. Unless flying into ADL in 4F and then I try to see my house, so I don't have to lie to the kids when they ask if I could see it. ;)

Ironically there is a recent thread where it was reported that Domestic travel PED usage was to be changed from "The commencement of descent" to the "Cabin crew, prepare the cabin for landing" PA.

Previously, PEDs needed to be turned off at the start of decent which, domestically, does not generally align with "Prepare Cabin for Landing" announcement.

I usually put my head back, close my eyes and relax. Unless flying into ADL in 4F and then I try to see my house, so I don't have to lie to the kids when they ask if I could see it. ;)

Reminds me of when a friend who I'd been staying with was driving me to ADL airport for my flight to DRW a few years back. Her two small boys were arguing in the back seat about what CD should be playing in the car.

My friend trying to distract them said "look up in the sky for Oz's plane it will have a white kangaroo on the tail". I'm thinking it's overcast there's no way we'll see anything but as if on cue an A330 appears out of the clouds & flies right over the top of us.

This was in the 'olden days' when QF metal still flew ex DRW & when the A330 operated QF81 ADL/DRW/SIN & when a Qantas flight number more often than not actually was a Qantas aircraft. :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

I just put my head back, close my eyes, and dream of turbulence!!

Geez remind me not to fly with you Al!
