I've been lucky enough to travel on both in the past year or so. OMATA has compared the products side-by-side today and although I think 'Lucky' and I have vastly different travelling tastes, I agree with this review in almost every respect.

For solo travellers: Etihad.
For couples (and more): Emirates.

He also found the EY Apartment bed hard!!

I would agree with Ben, almost 100%.
Emirates trumps Etihad in: IFE, bathoom space, drinks selection and quality but otheriwie it's Etihad all the way. I agree a couple may enjoy EF F more than EY F but if you were to give me a choice, even if travelling as a couple, I would choose EY F over EK F all the time #firstworldproblem!!!

A few notes:

EY shower can be manually controlled by the CSM to give more than 5 minutes water, depends on how busy is the F cabin (I got 8).

EK IFE may be better but the picture quality on EY is far superior.

I would select EY apartments any time over EK F.
There is an option to join apartments when traveling with someone and plenty of space to eat together.
Yes, EK offer better drinks, bigger shower and nice bar but these are all minor things compare to the stunning apartments.

While the Etihad product is newer to market, I think it brings much more style with it.

As a QFF, if I ever had the cash I'd undoubtedly fly EK (QF code) for the SC/points... but the gold trim and style of everything just makes me cringe :(

boomy did you feel at all like you were 'locked in a cell' on EY - I am not at all claustrophobic I just detest confined spaces - is their any vision out into aisle other than just the door?

On EY??? The apartments are extremely specious, each has a few windows as well.
I did felt a bit cramped on EK when the doors were closed.

I have only flown EK F AKL to SYD and have flown EY F SYD to LHR. I agree about the bed in EY being hard and the chair not reclining to a comfortable movie watching position was a surprise. The lobby on EY does not work well, there is much less room to concregate and speak with people than there is at the EK bar. I also find the service on EK more personable.

Now that I have had the EY apartment experience, I would go EK over EY in F.

Such differing views makes up the rich tapestry of life - I have only ever flown EK F once FRA-DXB-MEL and have no desire whatsoever to return - must admit I did love the shower though - bar fun 10mins but I was only one there so it's gloss soon wore off.

Agree Cruiser Elite, life would be boring if we all liked the same thing.
On long flights (8 hours plus), I enjoy reclining my seat, having a nice drink and watching a few movies. I can do that in more comfort on EK than I can on EY.

I prefer EK over EY. I don't agree with Ben on two aspects: Bed and Food. In my opinion EK clearly wins in both of these categories. The food on EK is far superior and the bed in EK F is much more comfortable than the EY A380 bed - but once again, this is just my opinion. I wouldn't be complaining having to fly either product :)
