Hi all,

Very new here .. so thanks in advance.

I had a question - Im platinum on Virgin and Qantas but I have to fly Emirates from Perth to Rome in September.
Will Emirates recognise any of the above FF programs? Is there anything to benefit with Emirates or am I starting from scratch (again :( )

Someone said I may be able to use the lounges but thats about it?

Cheers
Anthony

Welcome to AFF!

You’re most likely starting from scratch, though you could ask for a status match. I’m not sure if they offer them or not. I wouldn’t know where or who to ask though.

Yes, you start from scratch. You have 2 very relevant FF programs for an Aussie based flyer, but those 2 programs on a global scale are quite small and limited.
The 2 largest programs are Star Alliance and Sky Team. Since Velocity sort of covers SQ and NZ then you might consider joining the Korean Airlines program (SkyTeam Member, EK partner and KE flys to Oz.)

I would not say that QF's one world alliance is small and limited....... The biggest? No, but certainly not limited

To get access to Emirates lounges you will either need to be flying business or first. Or have status with Emirates - gold for most lounges, although there is one lounge in Dubai that silvers can get into.

Status with Qantas or Virgin will be of no use with Emirates. Virgin do have an agreement with Etihad, perhaps your friend was confusing Emirates with Etihad.

The other option is to try a status match with Emirates. On Flyertalk there have been mixed reports - it seems to work for some, but not others. The decision seems to be delegated to the local sales office. With Emirates in some countries being more willing to give matches than others.

I tried this a couple of years ago without success, and it was a person in Dubai that handled my inquiry. He even called me twice, quite late at night, to discuss the request. Like the OP, as a QF WP (at the time) and about to fly four sectors in EK F, I found it a little hard to accept the fact that I was starting off at the bottom of the ladder (or, more truthfully, if they had just even comped me Skywards Silver then I would have made it to Gold so it was really just status greed :).

No airline partners based in India, Brazil, mainland China and the entire African continent makes for very limited route offerings.
