Some of those fares are really putting JQ to the chopping block!

Note: Star Class is not J and JQ Y is no where near EK Y.

I know who I'd rather be flying!

BNE more expensive to SIN than MEL. Load factors must be terrible out of BNE

Have a bit of a think about it before you type....

1) Melbourne is closer to Singapore than Brisbane (3253nm compared to 3316nm)

2) It's possible that they don't need to fill seats out of Brisbane as urgently as they do out of Melbourne so no need for cheaper fares

I'm a big fan of EK and SQ, but I would still fly JQ starclass or Air Asia Premium seat over EK/QF/SQ in Y especially on overnight legs.
So at $770 BKK/SIN/KUL-MEL on JQ Starclass/D7 Premium or $430 on EK in Y, I'm taking JQ/D7.

The beauty of JQ starclass or D7 Premiun seat is that it allows you to fly sort of a "DIY mixed class" (lets call Starclass/D7 Premium seat = Premium Economy at best) to most destinations.

So, as an overall example for MEL-DXB return, you could fly:
One-Way MEL-KUL $770 on D7 Premium seat 9.35am-3.30pm
KUL-DXB (7.30pm-10.20pm) and DXB -BKK (9.40am-7.00pm) $725 in Y
BKK-MEL on JQ Starclass $770. (10.00pm-10.05am)
Total $2265.+ not a bad sleep on the inbound overnight leg and a premium economy seat for the longer part of the journey for the outbound sector.

Compared with a $2000-$2300 return flight (MEL-DXB) on SQ/EK/MH/TG etc.

Obviously you would need to factor in the likelihood that on JQ/D7 your flight might be delayed due to the general ****eness of their entire operations.

You can also mix on match on these carriers without having to pay this sort of fare, MEL-SIN $800 SIN-DXB $800-900SGD = total of $1400-1500. Or MEL-SIN $800 in Y , SIN-DXB on TG J class $1800-1900 SGD = total $2200-$2300.

The funny thing is that MEL-SIN sweet deal fares on SQ in Y are not points earning. Yet any flight from SIN seems to be an earning flexi fare.
The other thing that seems unfair is that MEL-SIN in J on SQ/EK is a lazy $4600.
A similar distance flight SIN-DXB on SQ in J is $2776, or even less on TG.
So while the Y fares ex-MEL-SIN are great value, the premium cabin fares are still white hot. - That's where the budget premium seats on JQ/D7 comes into plays

That is true. Although I've convinced myself, looking at MEL-SIN anyway, an exit row seat on SQ (for the extra $50 over a Y seat) is almost as good as Star Class (particularly on the 380 or 777, where you sacrifice the full reclinability, but only lose 1" in width, but won't have to risk someone reclining on you and get better legroom).

Well, I'll take Star class bulkhead seats (row 1) to Asia any day over any Y or P/E product you can find. I personally think Star class is great, given the pricing, access to Qantas Clubs and the QF miles/status credits. And the food and service isn't too bad either.

If you wish, you can then find a cheapish ticket (approx AUD 1000) to Europe on a quality airline.

Not sure why anyone would want to go to Dubai though (didn't the police there just beat a British man to death for no good reason?).
