Excuse my ignorance as I'm a novice at all this but totally fascinated by flying!

I am looking at taking the family for a quick trip to NZ. My husband would love to fly the A380 from syd to Auckland. But the return flight to Syd has better times if we fly Qantas home......

Am I able to purchase a one way ticket on Emirates and fly the return leg with Qantas? It let's me book it but I was wondering if there is any disadvantage?

Also, the return leg seems cheaper than if I purchased a return leg with the same airline both ways, even after the currency conversion. Why is this?

Sorry if my questions seem silly or straight forward but I am having trouble finding the correct answer!

Many thanks in advance

I think directional differences are due to different taxes. I fly to Auckland a couple of times a year to catch up with family and often use different airlines each way. At Christmas flying over DJ but flying back Emirates. Emirates also has higher check in luggage allowance IIRC. For my thinking its a short flight and I just want the cheapest fare. I hope you enjoy Auckland - catch a ferry out to Waiheke Island and visit the vineyards, if you have some time travel north up to Keri Keri.

It costs (IIRC) NZD14 to fly into AKL international and NZD14 to fly out of AKL International.

It costs AUD47 to fly out of Australia, no such fee to fly back into Australia.

You shouldn't have any problems doing that. Note that to book the return with Qantas you will need to book it from the Qantas NZ site and the price will be in NZ dollars. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I did this last year and once the currency was converted it ended up being cheaper than booking from the AUS site (as part of a rerun trip). It may be worth booking soon as there's a very nice sale to NZ with QF at the moment :)

Wow thanks for the replies!

$160 for the return leg, unbelievable. We live in Tamworth NSW so book the Qantaslink Tam-Syd leg many times per year and pay silly amounts for it at times so $160 from NZ is amazing.

Looks like I'll be booking the Emirates leg over so hubby can get his A380 fix, and Qantas home to connect with Qantaslink same day.

Many thanks everyone!

Safe travels!
