Hi All,
Planning a trip to Euro next July-Sep (BNE-Munich). Likely with Qantas as I do have lifetime silver and the luggage allowance helps when carting bikes around.

A few questions:
- Given it is peak season for those routes it seems getting any sort of upgrades would be sketchy. Any thoughts or strategies on that front? (I have 200k in Q points sitting around 🤷‍♂️)

- was thinking of getting a new credit card to earn some points. Are there any goto ones at the moment? I see some have lounge passes, but seems only after rolling it at 12 months down the track

cheers

For your outbound there is currently good award availability in July from the east coast (including BNE) to Helsinki via Tokyo flying QF/AY in business. You can add connection to Munich. You have enough points for that plus taxes are low which is a bonus.

For the return it’s probably good idea to go for a new credit card because you will need more points. Do you already have Amex?

You will find a summary of current credit card offers here - updated regularly

I’d book the outbound seats mentioned by @boomy while they are still there and worry about the return later when you have the points. Reward seats tend to go quickly, so snap them up now. If you change your mind or can’t get a return on points, you can always cancel the outbound seat for only 6,000 points, so not too much of a risk. I say that because if you end up needing to pay for a one way ticket home from Europe, that will likely cost as much, or nearly as much as a full return fare, and in that case you may as well get the status credits (SC) from the flights for maintaining your sliver or moving towards gold.

or did we misunderstand and you are buying a Y ticket and want to know your chance of points upgrade? Not to be too gloomy, anything is possible, but I would say it’s a pretty low chance of upgrade for a Silver on a popular route at a busy time, but you can’t get shot for trying.

And welcome to posting on AFF.

Edit to add: Sorry just realised you have LTS - so disregard my comment about maintaining silver above

We were hoping to minimise connections/luggage transfers as we are travelling with 2 bikes.. It looks like that limits things to going through Dubai (code share with Emirates)

Re Amex. I guess I have avoided them as they seem to always have higher charges in many places. Am I missing something?

Sorry, one more question.. what magic did you use to find those flights? When I search on the Qantas site I didn't come up with anything close to that :-?
