There are a couple of posts related to this one but they are ageing now. Though I'd add a refreshed data point.

Here is the relevant bit from the Velocity car hire web page:

Virgin Australia offers the largest network of car hire partners in Australia and access to hire cars in over 12,000 locations worldwide^.

Its pretty hard to misinterpret this:

"Regardless of how you book, when hiring in Australia and New Zealand, Velocity members earn 3 Points per $1 spent..." but in fact, one doesn't receive 3 points per $1 spent, you receive from Europcar (no comment on the others) 3 VFF points per 1$ of the car rental component, minus discounts (of course) and minus GST. No points for the various registration recovery, insurance recovery, administration recovery, premium location or the myriad other fees and charges.

Recent experience for me was a 2d rental coming to $107.47 total cost inc GST of which $85.32 - $12.80 (of discount) = $72.52 ex-gst was the actual car rental component. I received 218 VFF points for this (3x 72.52 = 217.56)

Its probably above board, Europcar has no idea whatsoever, I just called them and they said they don't work with FF points at all, its Velocity that does it all ... which boggled my tiny brain as surely Europcar _pays_ for Velocity points and transfers them? In any event, I was transferred to an answering machine in customer relations at Europcar which was full of messages and couldn't take any more so I got disconnected.. Customer Relations eh? One has to smile.

I'll write to Velocity next as on balance it probably is their problem ... their web page is completely misleading.

Its not misleading at all, just like QF its a rate based on time and km charges only, as per the terms and conditions:

General Terms and Conditions

In Australia and New Zealand the Points earn rate is based on the base rental cost of the vehicle. For the rest of world you will earn a flat rate of 800 Points per rental. Members will not earn Points on contract rates, international wholesale rates, staff and industry rates, restricted rate plans, damage liability cover, optional insurance, vehicle registration fee, premium location fee, admin fee, taxes, GST, one way fees, age surcharges, additional driver fees and equipment such ski racks, baby/booster seats or GPS rental costs.

I suspect they are inferring that car rental is the rental charge that earns points, not the fees, which I find annoying, its a wonder we dont pay a car finance fee, a car service fee , actually I better shut up, might be giving them ideas :)

Reading the above I have to agree, not incorrect (though the headline still seems misleading to me), but _where_ is the above snippet from? I can see T&C for the price promise and for corporate earn rates ... where is the general T&C???
