I logged onto the EUROPCAR website and entered a quote for a 34 day rental of a Vauxhall Astra Automatic picking up and returning at London Heathrow Airport.

Because I'm presently here in the USA on vacation, the site defaulted me as "living in the USA". The quote came up as GBP1396.06 including basic coverage.

I realized that as an Australian resident I should have said I was living in Australia. I went back and made the change and the quote came back as GBP3,701.65 also with basic coverage.

Can anyone suggest why there is such a huge discrepancy in price if I say I live in Australia and not the USA? I only wanted to rent the car not buy it!!!!

Aussie Tax.

But may I suggest you practice your american accent. ;)

QUESTION TO ALL. (If I can perhaps hijack the thread as it should also benefit the OP)

I am off to the UK for two months in 2018 and will get a car fora big chunk of it. So what are the best value options for renting a car there?

I am ok to not have to pick up and drop off at airports.

One way rental would be good too. Say start in Enlgad and drop off in Scotland

Nothing to do with Aussie Tax, I'm not prepaying and the UK price includes VAT irrespective of what nationality you are.

"Aussie Tax" = That many things are charged at higher prices to Australians for exactly the same thing.

Booking travel arrangements such as tours, hotels etc will often be cheaper if not booked via a .au channel.

Insurance is likely a difference in at least some of the price difference.
