how are they able to link PNRs for 2 competing rivals on the one ticket? I's like flying PER-SYD on VA then SYD-LAX with QF....

I can't imagine rocking up to the Etihad desk and saying 'my Emirates flight was late so I've missed my Etihad flight - can I have a free hotel room?'

They are travel agents, so no need to link PNRs, it would be on a single PNR.

QF themselves have offered such combos with competitors before. I know the situation you have mentioned replace VA with UA and it can be booked on one PNR
