QF and AA have a J sale ex-AKL and AA only has a J sale ex-SYD to SFO/LAX/NYC. Sale ends 07 NOV 2017. PM me for more details if you're interested.

AA ex-AKL:

QF prime or AA*QF on trans tasman.

AKL/SFO: $4092 AUD - Routing: AKL QF/AA SYD AA LAX AA SFO
AKL/LAX: $4085 AUD - Routing: AKL QF/AA SYD AA LAX
AKL/NYC: $4741 AUD - Routing: AKL QF/AA SYD AA LAX AA NYC

* Note: 14 sector SC run possible on the NYC fare earning up to 700 QF SC's return for the same price

What does this mean? That internally in the US you have a bunch of sectors to just fly around and accrue SCs but can't actually have a stopover?

Looks like a beauty! I've got 6 vouchers booked under DSC conditions - would they work?

Correct. Although you can have a long transit (< 24 hours) at each transit if you feel so inclined. Basically you get to rack up a large amount of SC's for no additional cost whatsoever, just by flying around as you said.

You can stop at LAX or SFO without being penalised by HIP rules however.

For QF no because the sale is ex-AKL and the fare rules only allow the fare to be sold in NZ which means it'd be in NZD.

Can anyone make AKL LAX work via MEL and the 787? Just seem to get stuck on 747 via BNE and the horrorible J seats I’ve vowed to never fly on again
 
Bugger. Just booked NZ to MEL- SFO return in J for $5190 for July next year. This would have been a better deal although I dont like to transit through SYD.

It's valid and prices fine. You may need to get QF to book it over the phone.
 
For those in the BA camp... the SYD/NYC version of this fare allows up to 1240 TPs (or 82% towards BA gold/emerald) by upping the fare slightly to exceed the MPM.
 
I am doing the AA fare for a conference next year, crediting to BA.
