I know there used to be an unspoken rule that WPs were not charged for excess baggage when travelling with Qantas, but I don't know whether this still applies now that the new baggage limits/charges have been introduced.

Anyone had an experience that might shed light on the issue?

They definately are.

I was 8 kg's over on the domestic portion of my trip to the UK, and for the domestic flight they wanted to slug me $80. They even wrote out the paperwork that I had to take to ticketing. As well, one of my bags was over 32kg, so that wouldn't be accepted. Staff member was very apologetic, but she couldn't budge.

Removal of excess stuff and shuffling got my total to 38.3kg (31.8kg on the heavy bag), which was accepted (38Kg as a WP).

In Sydney, I checked in at the F counter and no mention of weights was made (bags didn't really change weight). Same in Hong Kong when I checked in.

So don't know what flexibility the F check-in staff have.

(PS, the only reason I was overweight was the hotel I was staying in didn't have scales, so couldn't check before heading to the airport).

So you were 46 kg when you first weighted in ? ie 23kg for Y; 15 kg for WP, so 8kg over.

When you re-arranged the bags what did you do with the 8 kgs ?

Yep, that's correct. 8Kg over.

Disposed of some excess clothing (jumper or two, a towel, a pair of shoes and some other stuff). Much cheaper to buy it again than to pay $80 to SYD, plus a lot more for the international sectors if they wanted to charge.

Carry-on was overweight too (2 laptops + assorted cables and other guff), but was never checked.

Of course there's that well know tenet ...

stuff you are wearing or held in your pockets has no weight ...

The problem I cannot get my head around is why a WP would want more than 38 kg plus say 7 -10kg hand luggage :confused:

It must be a pain to cart around from curb to checkin ; etc etc.

I think the most I have taken and this was on a 6 week trip was 21 kg suitcase and 8 kg hand luggage and I swore necer again.

I now take a small suitcase 15 kg, a suitpack and pc bag - 4kg.

Life is worth living not being a pack horse.

I'm not sure if you know my situation or not, but I effectively have emigrated over to the UK for an unknown amount of time. 40+ kg is nothing when you are packing up your life and moving.

There are business people who need to carry that much alone in various display equipment, or technical tools for their role. In a previous role, we would sometimes take about 60kg of technical equipment with us (normally by road, with us flying).

I call this 'don't expect it and go prepared to pay, but if they don't charge you, that's rather nice'.
