I have just returned from my first trip on Singapore airlines from Cape Town South Africa to Singapore to Melbourne. I had a fairly high expectation of Singapore air but not sure it met them.

So, what do you expect in Business class on your airline?

Here's some different areas and my experience, love to hear yours....

Seating -
SIA - 2-2-2 configuration. "lie flat" sloping bed was rather uncomfortable as it was quite narrow
Etihad - 1-2-1 configuration. Proper lie flat bed.
Emitates - 2-2-2 configuration. Proper Iie flat bed.
Virgin Aust-

Night time:
SIA - no change just the pillow and blanket
Etihad- mattress overlay, doona, pillows.
Emirates- mattress overlay, doona, pillows. Good service as FA re made he bed every time I went to the loo.. Folding the doona back and straitening the bed out.

PJ's:
SIA - no
Etihad - Yes
Emirates - Yes

Amenities:
SIA - none ( just razors, toothbrush, comb available in toilets)
Etihad - Bvulgari-, razor, toothbrush, lip balm, creams, mouthwash , deodorant etc...
emirates- yes (best quality of the 3) ceramic handles razor, toothbrush, lip balm, creams, mouthwash , deodorant , tissues etc

As you can see, IMHO, Etihad and Emirates was better in these areas than Singapore Air.... BUT .... The one thing that didn't disappoint was the famed "Singapore Girl" .. The service was excellent, consistent and friendly ....

Look toward to hearing your thoughts......

Hmmm, doesn't sound as though you were living the dream on that route :p
I've never flown SQ other than in whY as an impoverished student many moons ago and was looking forward to it thanks to the tie-up with VA.
I'm sure ( hope?)your experience is not representative of the SQ premium product.

Sq between Sin and Cpt is the old J seat on the 777-300 (non refurbished) that does not recline flat. The A380 and 777-300ER that mostly fly between Syd (not sure re Mel) and Sin have the new completely lie flat (and very wide) J seats. No amenity bag / PJs in SQ J - this has been the case for a long time (only F gets them) and a negative, I agree. If you are male and like to admire the scenery, Sq is the airline for you but the scenery is better in Y than J (or F):p. Food esp. if you like Asian dishes, and service can't be beat on Sq J (and F!). Y is not too bad either. Sq's PPS program, well don't get me started!...but you can credit to DJ!

Disclaimer: I have a J saver redemption booked for my +1 Syd-Sin-Cpt return in Oct for 123250 Sq miles (TF from AMEX) and $870 in taxes. If paying cash, this comes to just under $7K.

I just happened to be looking at J prices recently for trip from SYD to Europe (perhaps MXP..?) and Emirates was (only!) $5K... (I was expecting much higher!) Having read this, I'm even more inclined to go this way... though shame they can't help me retain my platinum with either QF or DJ.. :(

My expectations would pretty much match your Etihad and Emirates experience, no mention of food, I'll assume it was all equally good :) Same with IFE. When I fly J I expect a lot. The pricing isn't cheap and I don't expect to be treated cheaply.

I've not flown J with SQ for a while - they used to be excellent, but colleagues have queried recent experiences much as you have and I'm inclined now, given these reports, to be pretty careful. Would probably choose TG over SQ in any event.

I wonder if the birth of Scoot will see the return of the proper full SQ experience of years ago? Presumably some of the price pressure will come off SQ as they now have a whole airline catering to that specific market...

SQ J is pretty sparse when it comes to PJ's, Amenity Bags, and the "I can't get comfortable" sloping flat seat on some planes, and not to mention, no seat overlay or turn down service. However I love their light blue "santa claus" all in one style sock-shoe-boots. Put your hands up if you love them like I do? ;) However compare this with a similar QF product and yep, you get PJ's , you get the Amenity Bag but exactly the same "I can't get comfortable" SkySlope seats, no seat overlay or turn down service. Anyway, save me the hassle, I bring one of my more comfortable PJ's and my own set of beauty product with my own bag ;)

What's wrong with those sloping flat seats for SQ J? I prefer new regional J over full A380/77W J seats for day flights.

Oh ok. Interesting that CX uses a mid haul plane for SYD-HKG-SYD A330-300...

Agree with you there :) I've always only flown on VS from SYD-HKG on the A340-600, do you think thr A330-300 that cx uses I will tell a big difference? :)

that is not the worst one in my opinion, QF uses a 767 to HNL

If travelling in J you will notice the cabin feels smaller compared to VS J, Y would be pretty much the same.

CX has short haul and long haul configurations in it's fleet, Sydney is always serviced by long haul metal***

***Excepting the dreaded "EQV" swap-outs which are fortunately rare

What makes you call the CX A330-300 a "mid haul plane"? Are you basing that description on the aircraft type itself or the seating configuration used? As far as I can tell, CX choose to use that aircraft type for it6s efficiency over the distance (rather than 777 or 747 they also have in their fleet) and so they can operate multiple flights providing schedule flexibility to passengers.

Their A330s on the SYD route are getting the new J seats, otherwise they have the same seats as the 747 aircraft.

I think travelling with a 20 month old 9 hours might be longggggggggggggggg :) I'm going to try this on VS UC SYD-HKG-SYD end of this year :) We'll see what happens :)

Pfft anything under 10 hours is short - I have 3 flights covering 24 hours of travels this weekend - I didn't think it too many...

Even in J that is a lot of travel. I'm flying to Europe soon and there for only 6 days and I think it is a long way. Better be a good wedding party :D

I just came back from 3 days in Cape town, home for 5 days, gold coast for 5 days, then Paris for 2.5days, London for 2 days, home for 4 days, syd for 3 days then USA for 1 week, Mexico for 3 days then home for a while..... It's a killer schedule but the miles help out a bit....

Paris / london with Etihad, then USA Mexico with VA....
