Amex was probably the first to offer this - extending the product warranty beyond the normal one year on most products like electronics. Most Gold or better cards would offer the same now. However it's not clear how this works or how to make a claim. It's all in the features and benefits but it's not clear what to do if something happens.
I just had a laptop have a major malfunction after about 22 months so Toshiba is telling me that it's not covered under their warranty as it's over 12 months and I didn't take out the DSE (who sold it to me) or Toshiba's extended plan. When I mentioned the credit card extended warranty it was as though they'd never heard of such a scheme.

Anyway it's going to cost a few hundred to fix, not too bad seeing what has to be replaced (not the hard drive at least) and sometimes it may be easier just to buy a new one. In this case it's been a good machine and worth fixing I think.

So if I just pay the bill and call the CC company they'll tell me I had to register all my purchases as soon as I made them probably so they won't pay out? I'm just expecting the worst as with all insurance (except probably car and health) they avoid paying anything wherever they can.

Anyone with experience of this? Card used was a CBA Gold MC.

Most of these cards have insurance PDSs available online. AMEX and CITI and ANZ do, at least. Sometimes the conditions are tacked onto the end of the travel insurance PDS and come under the term 'Purchase protection'.

For the above cards there is an excess of sorts, around $100 IIRC and you are meant to contact the insurance company to sort it all out prior to getting it repaired.

I haven't made a claim myself but as no-one else has replied I figure it's a start.

Edit- If this is your card, the PDS is here: http://www.commbank.com.au/personal/apply-online/download-printed-forms/ADB631.pdf (Pages 47 and 48)
Seems like it's covered by the travel insurance insurer Zurich on 1800 285 189
