Hi brains trust
Quick one - I have a booking in October for SYD-BKK return and I have paid for using points exit row seating for the flight from BKK to SYD (35,000 QFF points for the 2 of us).
Of course I paid for the exit row seating on Sunday, and the current sale to Asia started today.
I am thinking of cancelling my booking (and requesting a refund) and making a new booking in Premium Economy at the sale fare.

So my question is - does anyone have experience when cancelling a flight and requesting a refund, where there has been extra legroom seats booked using points? Were the points refunded or is it a lost cause?
I did check the Qantas website and it has the below, but I am still not 100% clear (and I am reluctant to call the call centre of course as I fear I will get 2 different answers from 2 different people).
Thanks heaps!
  • Seat selection is non-refundable unless:
  1. Qantas changes your seat for operational, safety or security reasons (even after boarding the aircraft), and we are unable to seat you in a suitable alternative.
  2. There is a flight disruption causing you to be moved to another flight and Qantas is unable to seat you in a suitable alternative on your new flight.
  3. Qantas moves you to a flight not operated by Qantas.
  4. Your fare is refunded (including where you are entitled to a refund under the Australian Consumer Law).

#4 if your fare is refunded then seems like the seat fee would be too.
You'd think that, but I'm currently in the middle of an argument with Qantas customer care who are saying that seat selection fees are only refundable if the flight is refunded by Qantas: "According to the terms and conditions of your ticket, seat selection fees are non-refundable in cases of voluntary cancellation".

I asked them to tell me where it says that in the terms -- https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/seat-selection/seat-selection-conditions.html -- and they just came back again telling me it's not refundable (without telling me where the terms say that, because they don't...)

@bjm76 did you end up cancelling the booking and did you ever get your points back?
