I'm planning a trip overseas next year in 'Y' and would appreciate any advice on what particular type of fare may be best.

My itinerary looks like it will be Brisbane / Calgary (Canada) / London / SE Asia (Either coughet or Koh Samui) / Brisbane

I first looked at Star Alliance and One World RTW but these seem expensive for a trip with only 3 stops.

Any suggestions?

Take a look at the Lufthansa fares, they're a round world fare of sorts as they'll allow you to fly to or from (one direction only) UK/Europe via LAX, SFO or YVR (Vancouver).

Their routing would be something like the following:

SYD-YVR (AC)-FRA-LON-FRA (LH)-BKK-BNE (TG)

The fare depends on when you're departing, but with fares from $1647 plus taxes, it's certainly alot cheaper than a 2.5-3k++ traditional round world.

Obviously its more restrictive and on their lowest fare bracket they tend to be non refundable, so be sure to check out the rules thoroughly prior to booking.

Their routing would be something like the following:

SYD-YVR (AC)-FRA-LON-FRA (LH)-BKK-BNE (TG)

This fare would also allow a surface between YVR-YYC so only a one way needs to be purchased in Canada.

SYD(AC)-YVR // YYC(AC)-FRA(LH)-LON(LH)-FRA(LH)-BKK(TG)-BNE

Lufthansa fares have high taxes (approx. $990 on this routing) but as TG mentioned, still a good option to allow RTW travel without buying a full OW or *A ticket.
