Some 10 days ago, I booked SYD-JFK-SYD for just a little over aud2,600. Shocked to see fares on QF website for same dates in economy is c. aud8,400! Business is au$17,842. Is there link to A380 and demand and supply issue or other reasons?
What are chances of upgrades from Y to J either way? I am booked qf107/108 on 13/11 and 17/11.

I think you'll find the rise has a lot less to do with loads/supply-demand, and a lot more to do with the time between reservation and departure.

When you booked the ticket, you were at T-14+ days, you're now at T-4 days. If you take a look at the calendar display of fares for T-7+ days, fares change from around 8500 to 2000-3000. You'll usually have a hard time finding cheap fares close to the departure date, that's the way fares are structured.

Obviously the prices are going to have spiked in the coming days as you’re really close to departure. This has always been the case. But it doesn’t help that the A380 issues are around too.
