quick question, ive just booked some FASA seats for next year to europe and paid for the taxes etc with my platinum edge credit card, is this stretching it to be covered by their insurance?

I would suggest it is stretching it to breaking point and well beyond.

The Platinum Edge Insurance PDS states:

Activation of Travel Insurance Cover:
Purchase of Trip on American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card or with Membership Rewards points.

The more explicit definitions with respect to Trip (with regard to your situation) are:

Trip
means

a) a Domestic Trip or an International Trip that commences with a Common Carrier Conveyance; or

b) a Return Flight Offer for American Express Platinum Edge Credit Cardmembers.

and

International Trip means

(i) a trip anywhere outside Australia; and
(ii) for which the airfare has been charged to an American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card (or paid for with equivalent American Express Membership Rewards Points).

and

Common Carrier Conveyance Trip means a Trip:

(i) taken by You between the point of departure and the final destination as shown on Your ticket;
(ii) For which the entire fare has been charged to Your American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card (or equivalent in American Express Membership Rewards points).

So using QF points for any part is going to mean no coverage (given the requirement for "entire fare").

Time to look for other travel insurance - and you will need to look to make sure it covers you for reward redemptions appropriately.

bugger, should have paid for it through a carrd that gives me extra points for qantas in that case but doesnt offer me the travel insurance

i was very lucky with how many miles i needed for the tickets so didnt have time to muck around, at least im not heading to the states, so the travel insurance wont be too horrendous, but it has been a while since ive needed to buy

FYI for future reference

The only amex card covers for ASA is the Qantas Ultimate card (not sure about the gold equilivalent).

Are you sure of that?

I believe that the Amex Platinum Charge Card, and the Centurion card insurance cover any form of payment / award redemption more than adequately:
If You purchase an airline ticket (or part thereof) using American Express Membership Rewards or similar reward points and the airline ticket is subsequently cancelled as a result of any Travel Disruption and the loss of such points cannot be recovered from any other source, We will pay You the retail price for that ticket (or part thereof) at the time it was issued

Ironically the Amex edge card has only just been converted from a previous ultimate Amex card, missed it by a few weeks!

Might also pay to see if the QFF points have to have been earned by that card exclusively, or not, as well as QFF points can come from many sources.

I did not take the risk last time I booked an award seat among an international sequence of flights and just stumped for the extra travel insurance. Despite having paid for 90% of the rest of the flights on the Platinum Amex Credit card.

If it really goes pear shaped, you'll want proper insurance.

I'll happily use the Amex insurance (without other insurance) where it's clear i'm covered (ie. fully paid flights).

In the cost of a trip, (extra) travel insurance is a small cost.

So the 'part thereof' is the chestnut.

Would this not be a case for paying the $900 for the Amex Charge Card that gives you free insurance even when you don't use this card to purchase your airfare?

Remember you also get FOC membership to Priority Pass & an FOC ticket on DJ within Australia. Some people get put off by paying the $900.00 in a lump sum but if you add up the cost of incidentals separately IMHO you'll get your moneys worth.

Here's the link to that thread for what you get for your $900.00
