OK, so going with the current trend in favourite/least favourite threads, what is your favourite city in Australia?
Mine is Hobart. I completely love the place and am going there this weekend to get my 'Hobart fix' as I like to call it. I need a Hobart fix at least three times per year.
Weather doesn't bother me. Winter chill is lovely although the summers are little cool.
Great food and wine. Inceredible bushwalking opportunities only minutes out of the city.
Great beer - Cascade Draught, please make yourself available on the mainland.
Relaxed vibe and uncrowded.

Tough question. I can't decide between Cairns so much to do there and not just the reef and lfestyle; or Darwin for the lifestyle and work options.
On balance the place I'd like to live the most is Brisbane, considering work and family balance.

Perth \ Darwin, and unlike some others, I actually like the Gold Coast... (I'm heading up there early next month with the family for a holiday... :D )

Indeed, Living in Adelaide I certainly miss weekend surfin' safaris to either the GC or the SC.

For me it obviously has to be the Sunshine Coast.Being totally biased I prefer the central and southern ends of the Coast, not pretentious Noosa-besides full of refugees from Melbourne.:p

A hard one as there are many places that I like. Probably Melbourne though I'll think about it some more.

Sunshine coast for sure. Although based on a few shortish visits, I'd also live in Perth (or surrounds) or Mackay. I love the "feel" of MEL, but would never live there (I think anything below 24deg is unbearably cold).

edit: though I guess it depends if it's favourite to visit, or live. Which would change my answer.

Depends upon the Season - I do like the Sunshine coast in Late Summer.

I kept looking for this thread, not sure if it was already here or if I should start it myself. Surely it should be in open discussion not the playground though, to match up with the other 2 threads. And someone might like to start a generic favourite cities thread, for the world.

For me though, I enjoyed Hobart when I was there, though Melbourne is also very nice. It’s a hard choice.

Well I think all the major cities are pretty good, each has its strengths and weaknesses. I am biased, but Melbourne is my favourite...

Easy to find favourite cities on the coast. What about heading inland a bit, take the sea out of the equation and what are the best inland cities? Does Canberra rise to the top then? I'll put in a plug here for the town I grew up in, Bendigo, which has a remarkable legacy of Victorian-era gold rush opulence, although I didn't really appreciate it until I travelled as an adult much further and wider. And it even has a good dose of anglo-chinese culture and a few decent cafes and restaurants in amongst the pokies and the bogans doing blocks in their soon to be impounded cars ;) Ballarat is almost in the same category, but it's colder and well, those from Bendigo out of principle don't have anything good to say about the place (:!:)

I have a mate on acreage in Doonan, and visit regularly for golf (and beers), so I don't mind the northern end of the SC. In addition to the refugees from Melbourne, there's also a lot of ex-pat New South Welshmen, so there's usually a good time to be had around June / July (given that I'm a born and bred QUEENSLANDER!!!!)

Melbourne of course. ;)
But if I had to pick another city, it'd most likely be Sydney. I just like my big, busy cities.

Brisbane is where I moved to, in order to get away from the tourist trap where I grew up, the Gold Coast.

Canberra for me. My favorite city in all the world - as a place to live. Places to visit are legion, and every city has its charms and its flaws.

However, I did notice in the previous thread that nobody had a bad word for Hobart.

I think it's a gem of a place.

Blasphemy, you told me it was Perth when you were last here ;)

Mine would have to be Melbourne, it was the one place I had considered moving when I was looking to move away from Perth.
