Hi, would this be correct (the return sector cost).

. SYD-LHR Y+ ASA on QF1 for 2 pax, total costs= $762.
. LHR-SYD J Classic Award on BA15 for 2 pax, total costs=$1,322.

thanks

I assume your prices are for the "taxes". Note that departing LHR in a premium cabin and on a long-haul flight you will be incurring the highest value of the UK Air Passenger Duty charge. It is likely this "tax" is a major contributor to difference in the prices quoted.

UK APD for seats "not in the lowest class cabin and under a certain pitch" incur an APD of £170. That's ~AU$280. (HM Revenue & Customs)

Note the ex SYD fare has a departure tax of AU$47.

To get a tax breakdown estimate I suggest using ITA (Matrix - ITA Software) to get a fare estimate for the route and check the taxes/levies/charges breakdown that facility provides.

Thanks Nelly and Serfty. I'll check that site.

edit: result from ITA; approx $400 BA surcharges, $280 APD + some other smaller $$'s = about $700 each.

The paid component for Classic awards and ASAs is not necessarily the same. The $ amount on classic awards is the fees & taxes.

For ASAs though, remember they are effectively a Points+Pay system, and even if the points are the same as a classic award, the $ won't be. One of the reasons is you earn SCs and Points on an ASA, so they have to recover the "cost" of these somehow.
