FF points round the world in premium?

In May 2015 I am retiring and taking the wife on our first overseas trip. We are going to the US, Italy, France and Britain in that order. In another recent post I was told about the 280,000 point RTW in business but I will not have enough points unless I leave the missus at home!. I have 465,000 now and cant purchase more due to the 20,000 limit and am accumulating mainly through credit card at about 5000-6000 a month. I am getting the feeling bookings should me made in the near future.

I cant find anything on the Qantas site for the business seating option and I was wondering if there was a similar fixed points option in Premium seating?

I can't answer your question about premium but can you both apply for some credit cards that offer a sign up bonus or is there a "relative" that can transfer you some points?

Premium economy equivalent multi sector one world award is 210,000 pts per passenger. You can do premium economy on all of the long haul sectors, if available, (QF or CX to the US, BA to Europe, QF/BA/CX back to Australia. Notice you leaving from UK, if you can leave from elsewhere in Europe (even if transiting via LHR to get home), you will save up to $350 per passenger in taxes, as from memory, Premium economy departure tax from UK is charged at same rate as business class.

That does sound doable. Unfort I have no choice about coming back home from the UK as another couple are travelling with us and they have limited time and arent going to the UK. I want to be there for the Ashes, Wimbledon and the Open at St Andrews - all in July so cant do the trip in reverse as one of the others is locked into the middle of May for 6 weeks.
When I followed your link to the Qantas site the page is different to that when I log in to my account - all the points required tables arent there. Everything else looks the same except headings across the top and the lack of points tables. Any thoughts?

Instead of getting on the aircraft at LHR buy a seperate ticket to Dublin or Amsterdam. Then your RTW ticket DUB/AMS-LHR-Australia. The money you save in APD will more than for pay positioning flight. If you have to go London from St Andrews or where ever, and have London transport /hotel costs, even more so.

If you still want Business you could sign up for some credit cards, open a Bankwest savings account each and get free 10k QF points, there are insurance deals you can sign up for, but you will probably have to wait at least 3 months to see any points from these, buying the 20k from the QF website is a rip off.... But yes the sooner you have the points and can book the better...

It would help if you knew someone who had them or think up a 'relative' who might have some...

I think the 10K bonus points deal finished on 30 May. But you could sign up for the QFF points you'd get from account balance or debit card payments but the points per $ isn't great compared to the return you'd get from interest on a internet saver account.

Thanks for the advice guys. I don't think bonus points on credit cards is an option as it takes about 2 months for all the points to appear in the account and I want to book asap. I have been using that way of boosting my points for a few years now, the last in January. There are a couple out there where there is 40,000 - 50,000 points but time is agin me.

I'm trying to get a handle on all this and am thinking of paying for economy oneworld flights for all the legs except the return GB to home leg and booking business for that trip on FF points. If I have enough points I will try for upgrades on the paid longer legs.

The advantage of that is we can earn points on the paid legs for future use and fly home on the longest and final leg in comfort. I'm sure there are holes in my logic and all suggestions welcome.

Sometimes one ways can be expensive to buy, which is probably the main downside. You would have enough points though for HBA-MEL-LAX in business (96 K each) and LHR-MEL-HBA (128K each), and could just pay for the shorter trans-atlantic and intra US/Europe flights in economy. Or look at buying and then redeeming Avianca Life Miles (if/when they have a 50% off promo - see separate threads) for the transatlantic portion. Also worth looking at how much Fiji Airways charge for the transpacific ... in business they can be very reasonably priced, if you don't mind the stop in Fiji enroute.
