just read that Fiji getting new new A350s & will fly to either Dallas, Houston or Chicago. Dallas makes most sense to me, as DFW is major AA hub & Fiji codeshare with AA & in one world.

Yes, DFW would make sense.

Hopefully become a full OW member while they’re at it.

ORD , also an AA hub, also might make some sense, especially if they can connect to SYD and MEL flights.

I would tend to agree - given there are already non-stop SYD-DFW and MEL-DFW flights, FJ would have to work harder (better pricing, better service) to compete against QF's non-stop service.

There are currently no non-stop flights from AU to ORD, so FJ would be on an equal footing with other carriers from a convenience perspective.

I guess it depends on how much they need Australian traffic to support the route. Fiji (the country, and the water) is a strong brand in the US, and they might just be OK with traffic from US and Canada to fill the flights, in which case DFW & AA tie up would serve them well. If they need Australian through traffic to fill the planes, then ORD probably would be better, it still has excellent AA feed for the NA originating traffic.

They need to sort out their treatment of North American bound Skiers who are hit with an additional “ oversize” baggage charge for Ski Bags that other carriers class as Sports Equipment. Eg: even if flying in J with 1 suitcase and 1 ski bag you are hit with the oversize charge. There is a lot of talk about this ski bag extra charge on Australian Ski sites.

Tentative NAN-DFW schedule revealed:

I would hope it's a new aircraft for expansion. Would be good to see FJ continue expanding in North America and build a real alternative for trans-Pacific customers

The two rotations have been removed from the schedule but safe to say it likely doesn't mean much at this stage as they still await approval. Screenshot 2024-07-26 at 4.57.56 pm.pngThat said, assuming it receives approval and returns, it's hard to imagine where an extra airframe is going to come from given they have nothing on order and the global backlog on deliveries. If they're also to keep SFO/YVR/LAX on the 350, the only way I can realistically see it working is if they cut LAX back from a daily service given YVR and SFO are already sub-daily. Whether there's enough feed via DFW to justify pulling back on LAX is unknown. Otherwise, I'd expect to see either YVR/SFO cut or at least downgraded to a 330 (I suppose they could also start mixing aircraft on LAX depending on the day of the week, but I'd imagine that to be less likely).

I have a reward booking via QF for next June, and deliberately chose LAX over SFO for the transfer (despite disliking LAX more) simply on the assumption that the 350 is safer on the LAX route -- I'd recommend that to anyone going forward at this stage.

(An operational issue last month saw my NAN-SFO flight delayed several hours and almost downgraded to a 330, with the only available 350 at the time switched over to LAX even though it had originally been shown to go SYD-NAN-SFO, so it does seem they prioritise LAX when IRROPS occur.)
