I just dont understand why airlines would do this. How much are they saving per pax per flight? $10? Just charge the customer $10 more and be done with it. I don't think that $10 is going to make or break someone's decision to pony up for J.
No doubt, but I’ll take honesty over spin that borders on fantasy.
They could have gone with “enhancements based on customer feedback.”

I disagree. Why should someone who doesn't drink Champagne have to pay $10 more for their ticket just so someone who does drink Champagne can enjoy it? A different approach may be to have charged for Champagne in J, but then there's still a cost to the airline for purchasing it and carrying it, whether it's consumed or not, so the saving would be less.
Or Elk and Reindeer! Yum. I missed that on my last few flights. Why should a vegetarian pay for the J menu to have a steak option when they don't eat it?

Doesn't Qantas only offer sparkling domestically?

Yes they do but what is probably more pertinent is that competing airlines flying the same SH routes as AY eg. BA do serve Champagne.Doesn't Qantas only offer sparkling domestically?
I thought only AY serve the HEL-MAN and HEL-LHR routes. Didn't BA stop flying to Finland?Yes they do but what is probably more pertinent is that competing airlines flying the same SH routes as AY eg. BA do serve Champagne.
No clue about MAN as I’ve never flown it but BA do indeed fly LHR-HEL they have several flights a day on that route.I thought only AY serve the HEL-MAN and HEL-LHR routes. Didn't BA stop flying to Finland?

Yep, no BA metal between the UK and Finland anymore. Not temporary - 4 BA flights per day but all codeshares on AY planes.

Yes - and this is known when booking/purchasing that option.
