First 787 service to Australia soon?

As reported over the last year or so, Air India are planning on using the 787 for a service to Melbourne around 6 days a week, recently they have been advertising for staff and ground agents, so it looks like it will happen after a lot of talk over the years!

Well, considering how many of my seat-mates on ex MEL SQ flights that were transiting SIN to connect with SQ to India it might make sense! But it's a fly SQ and transit in SIN or fly AI and transit in DEL (unless you are going the DEL) question. I know how I'd answer!

I don't think Air India will see the 787. Recent financial issues tied with half their pilot workforce calling in sick this week = serious trouble.

Assuming they can find the money to pay for them. The first 787 to operate in Australia will probably have an orange star on the tail.

There have been rumours floating around about UA flying to SYD with one from HOU I believe it was. If said rumours are true, it's likely to be before the orange star.
