Hi everyone - looking for some help/advice with an upcoming booking to secure J upgrades

Planning on travelling to Japan at the end of Jan 2017 into either HND/NRT out of either SYD or MEL (connecting from NTL)....due to partner's work, we have fairly limited dates (which may be our first hurdle). Im a velocity platinum, so whilst I know award trumps upgrade in value, looking to book flexi Y tickets and then use KF points to upgrade to help maintain the velocity status. This will be our first time travelling with SQ in J, so I am aiming for 773ER services or 388. I have got the ideal flights in a spreadsheet ready for booking!

Currently, flights are only available till very early January, with our selected dates I imagine will open up in the next 2-3 weeks. Given ill probably have to wait a few days for the return services to open up before I can book the entire roundtrip, which means there will be a few days where award J seats on the outbound services will be available to be booked....does anyone have any advice on securing the award upgrades? Would you recommend booking one-way tickets that way you can secure the award upgrades on the outbound immediately? Or is it just cross the fingers and hope the award availability remains?

Hope this scenario hasn't confused anyone too much...any thoughts on how I should tackle this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!
