Hi, I'm just looking for a reality check on refund rules between Qantas and Qatar. It pretty much is a covid related question with cross over into normal fare rules.
Basically, i'm looking at a trip to Europe in June, within the various fly flexible rules for Covid. Business class, Central europe. It's a choice between Qatar and Qantas (QF platinum here so SC are a thing).
The only worry is that I get covid and can't go, and hence want to cancel and NOT have a voucher. In this situation cancellation will be before departure. If I get covid in europe, then changing the return will be fine.

Qantas Normal fare rules say (business sale), to me, Cancellation before departure incurs a fee, and I infer a refund is possible because they say the refund is in AUD. no-show no refund - but that's not a concern in my situation. Qantas Flexible offer is free date changes, and refund to a voucher.

Cancellation (including no show)

Before and departure:

  • Cancellation fee of A $800 per person applies. No charge for infants paying 10% of the fare.
  • Cancellation after No Show, ticket is non-refundable.

This fare may be used as credit towards the payment of any higher fare from the point of origin, provided the new fare conditions are met. A reissue fee of AUD $400 per person applies or after No Show A$800 per person applies. Cancellation after No Show, ticket is non-refundable.If the new fare is cancelled the original fare cancellation conditions will apply. This credit must be used within 12 months of the original tickets date of issue.
Any refund or credit is the Australian dollar price.

The Qatar fare rules indicate refund allowed with restrictions and a $370 per leg cancellation fee or $1276 max per booking.
But the Qatar fly flexible rules say (prior to departure):
Get the unused value of your ticket refunded through your original form of payment, with no penalties or refund fees.

My interpretation is that Qantas I can refund with a $800 fee, Qatar fly flexible is full refund with no fee. The risk with Qatar is having a $1276 fee.

Have I got that right?
Any experiences with Qatar refunds? Good/bad/ugly
Qantas refund process is well known.
