Quote: The day-to-day reality
For one thing, flight crew are exposed to sickness at elevated rates – the inescapable effect on working in a contained aluminium tube crammed with hundreds of other people.Unquote.

I didn’t realise we (the travelling Australian Public) were that bad. Also I didn’t know the hourly rate was under 30 AUD per hour. This is so underwhelming but it explains a lot, I hope they do get there pay increase and like for like job pay balance. Please feel free to contribute observations including but not limited to feet on the bulkhead behaviour of some of our very finest. Can you imagine performing CPR and then being tapped on the shoulder to be asked where is my breakfast?

When Mr Pants was working for QantasLink, the flight attendants were not getting paid during training. Some of them used to sleep in their cars cos they couldn’t afford to pay rent. He paid a fine for one going into Tasmania because she couldn’t afford to eat in the crew hotel (which wasn’t near anything useful on a minimum rest overnight) so had a bag of apples

I was a flight attendant before I went into nursing, on an old legacy contract and took a massive pay cut to go into nursing. Then 5 years later was approached about going back in as cabin crew (as they were actively recruiting RNs) and it was about a 20% pay cut from a coughty nursing wage

It’s not the job it used to be. Not by a long way

Interesting how you took a massive pay cut from FA to nurse, then it would have been even worse if you went (back) to FA. I don't know if you worked or would have worked for Qantas (no need to reveal if you don't want to), because I would have been interested to hear whether this was before or after privatisation (i.e. when the shareholders became the callous gods they are).

I don't know enough about nursing wages these days, but I had the impression they are somewhat respectable, putting aside that they also put up with a lot of **** (figuratively and literally).

The changing passengers probably not helping in this regard. But I imagine that people are clamouring all over each other to get into the job, even if they don't intend to make a career out of it (and the airlines are probably quite comfortable with this - they don't want to encourage lots of people to stick around).
