I have got to the point where I might want to cancel a flight with qantas. I found this old thread that only says that the option exists. http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...ram/now-able-cancel-qantas-bookings-9515.html

I also checked out this from qantas Book - Manage Your Booking - Flight Booking - Cancel Flights
That says:
Qantas said:
If you booked at qantas.com or through Qantas Telephone Sales, and your fare conditions allow, you can cancel your flight* and receive either the value after fees have been deducted as a refund, or a credit voucher^ t

It is a red-e-deal fares that I'm thinking of cancelling. I am wondering what fees are involved in cancelling. The fare conditions tables says I retain value, if cancelling more than 24 hours before the flight. I can't find any cancellation fees.

If I cancel and take the voucher, when I then use that to book another flight is it considered a change to the booking and hence I would be charged the $50 change fee. If I choose to "receive the value after fees" again does that mean they deem it a change and hence apply the $50 fee?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

When you cancel the value is stored

When you go to use it then that entire value is applied towards the new fare and then you will be charged the fare difference plus the $50

so I guess doing receive the value after fees have been deducted as a refund that would be the value minus $50.
I should just suck it and see.

I don't believe red-e-deals are refundable. But I haven't checked in a while.

BTW, there are also some issues with applying red-e-deal credit towards other flights. The new fare must be "of a higher value", which can cause hassles when redeeming it. But there may be a workaround.

I'll let others comment further.

yeah, it wasn't exactly clear on that point in the 15 minutes searching I did. The qantas website does say that you can choose to get a refund or voucher. And red-e-deals just says retain value.

The higher value thing is a great tip. Luckily what I'm looking to cancel is just about the cheapest sale fare I can get on my regular route. So shouldn't be too much more to pick a standard red-e-deal later or fly somewhere more exciting. ;)

I do think experience is the best option, so it won't hurt me to learn from experience.

Not refundabe, but can be used as credit towards fare within 12 months.

So say $150 fare, credit held for $150, then when u use take $150 off price and add change fee ($50 for domestic iirc)

New fare caanot be less than old fate, again, iirc.

If you cancel you will received a credit 'voucher' based on the original booking reference.

This value is available for one year from the date originally ticketed, not that of the first flight of the original booking and not that of the date you cancelled.

You can than use this voucher to book another one-way or return flight starting on Oz. It cannot be used for 'multi-city' bookings online.

The cost of the new booking must be more than that of the original.

If everything is ok, on rebooking with the 'stored' value you will need to pay the difference between the cost of the new booking and the original fare with the cancellation fee payable in addition.

You can also use the value by calling Qantas, but then an additional 'assisted' booking fee is payable as well.

Also, the credit can only be used towards one persons' ticket.
As in, it cannot be used for two tickets on the same flight for two different people.

I found that a little annoying.
