I am due to go to Bali in a weeks time, which I really do not want to chance.

Does anyone know if Jetstar is letting people opt out of flights?

I did try and call Jetstar but due to the current situation the line is continuously busy, understandable in the current situation, which is why I thought I would post the question here.

Regarding travel insurance, I am wondering if the travel insurance companies pull the old chestnut "it's an act of God, sorry no refund"?

Cheers,

I'd suggest reviewing the T+Cs in your travel insurance - they should provide (have provided) a PDS explaining what is covered and what isnt.

I believe the airlines were offering changes to destination / dates but that may not help with prepaid accommodation etc.

Jetstar are offering no change fee for change of destination (fare difference may apply). I dont know about cancelling booking (i would expect you would get a credit voucher but not a refund).

im in the same boat - they are offering a credit voucher for the value of the flight or waiving the change of destination charge to apply the fare to a different location.

neither is of use to me as I bought a super-discounted fare that wouldn't cover a trip anywhere at the last minute at jetstar's high prices :(

Yes, I feel your pain. This is my first time travelling with them and it is just all too hard when things go wrong.

With the change in destination offer, where would you really want to go?

There are no "act of god" clauses in Australian insurance. Natural disasters must be listed or not, most TI will cover it and some will not. Check your PDS.

i had a look at fiji but all they could do was a 1 stop flight that came to $800 return to syd - i'd rather just can the whole trip i think and keep the credit voucher for a sale to HNL or HKT

well this is going as well as can be expected - my first and last time dealing with JQi I think, trying to get my return bali tickets changed to a one way syd-bkk with the response from JQ being:

1. you can have a refund in 5 days (i travel in 5 days)
2. you can rereoute but you lose everything paid except the base fare and have to pay the difference (half the fare forefeited effetively)

stymied at every turn :(

The Jetstar policy on Bali cancellations/re-routes is here:

My flight out of there is on the 1st August, so I will just have to wait a while.

Yeah - my experience with most airlines (full service and LCC, doesn't seem to make a difference) is that they won't allow you to invoke the change/cancel/rearrange provisions until there is official notification. In this case you might have to wait until they include 1 August in their advisory.

With the new volcanic ash cancelling flights also comes new dramas.

I managed to get a credit from Philippine airlines for our flights from Manila to Bali, no problem.

I reckon I can change my Jetstar flight to another date, no problem.

The hotel I had booked wants a 50 percent cancellation fee for me only giving 3 days notice, amounting to $650. BIG problem for them.
