I purchased about $5k Flight Centre's gift cards as part of Amex promotion and they expire end of this year. I am quite stressed to hear that FC is permanently closing most of its stores and potential of losing GCs value without using them.

How can I make best use of them without losing a significant value?

You can make an online booking but you then have to call FC to pay with the GCs. It is quite poor that you can't input the GC numbers in the payment process. Even David Jones let's you do that.

If I was in your situation, I would book and pay for an Australian trip, for example the Ghan for next year. I think you should be able to use the cards for bookings past the expiry date as long as you book and the money is paid to the travel provider by the expiry date (and you have proof). I would not wait too long to do this though. You may be able to also use the cards to book an international trip for next year - but again you would want to check that FC has actually paid the money to the provider and that the provider is in a reasonable financial position.
