Hey guys, just after your sympathy and advice :P

PE flight from here to BNE-LAX-SAN on QF

Had to change flights for all four legs + price difference in fare + new fuel tax + change fee charged by TA/QF($160)

This amount to about $800.

If i were to say then choose to upgrade my ticket to a J and change dates, would it make any difference? just trying to think of ways minimise the damage of the hip pocket if can be helped or might as well go J if the 800 will go towards it rather than just for the change (never been in J before for int flight).

Thanks for any advice!

All depends on the relative price between J and PE and whether J has also go up.
You will get hit with new fuel tax and change fee regardless.

Always the problem in booking a cheap fare way out, the change fees will be massive.

How much is the Business fare and what would you have to pay all up for the additional 180 SC's?

Do it soon, from May 2 that change fee goes up a lot more:

Tickets issued: On or before 1 May 12 A$60* On or after 2 May 12 A$200*

Do you know what the fare basis/class is? This will assist with understanding what sort of fare you could upgrade to and therefore the cost. I am assuming that you are changing the routing? Otherwise, I was under the impression with Qantas that provided the same booking class was available, only the taxes etc are at current levels with the fare at historical levels - I think they call it a Type 1 reissue. If you change the fare construction points, current fares will apply. Do you have to change the outbound? If not, wait until you have flown the first sector and then it will lock in the historical values for the taxes as well. See here: Qantas International Ticket Reissue Policy

Obviously we need to know the fare class for the OP's original ticket to determine upgradeability, but also don't forget a total cancellation (if possible) and re-booking may be cheaper for the OP - if reasonable fares are still available. I wonder how soon the OP is supposed to be travelling?

Thanks guys, a mountain of information!!!

1. My ticket is BNE-SYD (B) then SYD-LAX (T) then LAX-SAN (B). the classes are in brackets and same thing on the way back.
2. The only thing i changed was the dates at both ends, Travel is between 16th of May and 26th of May 2012.
3. There is no change in destinations for ANY of the legs.
4. I will definitely need to have it sorted by 2nd of May anyway but good to know the fees are going up so much!!!!!

Thanks again for all your combined wisdom!

Thanks for the link, had a read, but couldn't quite understand whether i have changed the "fare construction points" or not, as i was unable to determine what consistutes these points.

I unfortunately have to change the outbound dates, not destinations or class of travel mixed B and T classes.

Thanks :)

I booked from Flight cent and on their T and C, the cancellation policy is very ambiguous. In the process of clarifying what that might be. The tickets at the moment are very similarly priced as previous if i picked alternate routes. So if the cancellation fee is < changing fee, will go with that option. But i need to figure out how they work out the cancellation fee, time based, ticket class based etc...

damn, cant do anything through Qantas, so just have to wait it out till tomorrow and see what fantastic fees i will have to pay for going with FC..................
