I have an international flight which I changed from the purchased Sale fare to a Saver fare on some legs. A change cost of about $80.

I did another search to change my return and just for fun my search included moving my outbound leg to the same day. Selecting to the same flight on the same day gave me a $20 credit for selecting the same outbound Saver fare. Now that I accepted those changes I cannot make more changes unless I contact the call centre so I can't easily see if I can do it again.

Basically while moving one leg, I was able to achieve a discount on another leg without actually changing flights.

Feels like a bug.

Yes, there does seem to be a limit on the number of online changes one can make to certain types of bookings (specially those involving vouchers, credits or the like). I think the booking engine just loses its mind when PNRs get too much fun stuff in them.. and then.. yeah.. you have to call.. ugh.

This is normal. There are times where your original flight now has lower buckets open and therefore the price goes down.

Aren't international flights still priced on a return basis? Things can look strange as compared to domestic where its mostly priced on one way fares.

now the unlimited "free" change offer from Qantas is no longer 'free'. it will cost me the time (and frustration) of having to contact the call centre.

but more importantly I lose the opportunity to investigate and document these anomalies.

I never did receive the original credit from Qantas for my flight change. of course at the time I didn't keep a screenshot.

Today I've done another one day change on a different booking, this time a classic redemption BNE-DPS-BNE. This time the system calculates me another refund which doesn't make sense as points and taxes would be the same each day. If I keep this up my flights will be free.

Some tax components (such as airport fees) could be calculated in IDR and forex changes may have worked in your favour?

Last year I had some changes to JAL awards result in a $90pp refund as they'd temporarily removed the fuel surcharge. My understanding is that each time the booking is reticketed, all the fees/charges are recalculated - which can result in a refund or some additional charges requiring payment.
