Sharp Airlines will be operating flights from Hobart to King Island and Flinders Island on 3 month trial. They will be underwritten by the Tasmanian government.

Most visitors to the Tasmanian islands are from Victoria so it’s designed to encourage intrastate tourism. I miss flying so much, so it might be time to finally visit Flinders! I have a Tasmanian travel voucher so why not.

The ABC article:
Flights from Hobart to remote Tasmanian islands labelled 'huge lifeline'

The golfers in the south of the state will love the flights to King Island! I might do Flinders ...

Crikey memories - I was on FI every month for 10yrs 77 to 87 buying sheep and cattle to bring back to Vic for slaughter / re-heat - flew out of Welshpool (VIC) on a twin engine most times - usually the grocery run as it left sparrow fart each day - gave me plenty time to work on arrival - would stay 1 night in Whitemark Hotel - then flew to Launceston or Hobart for a night in either Casino - then back to MEL then bott a ride home to Foster (VIC) somehow.

I truly loved those days - FI people were just SPECTACULAR SALT OF THE EARTH people - formed such wonderful friendships with so many.

I only did KI a handful times - logistics bringing stock back to MEL then down to South Gippsland too hard - FI we landed them back in VIC on our doorstep. You have never seen sea sickness until you have seen 100 bullocks and cows arrived after a rough crossing Bass Strait - in all sincerity they could stagger for weeks until they got their land legs back.

Way too many fabulous unbelievable stories to tell - and not a golf course in sight - although I doubt I would do the crossings again a small plane but was just fearless back then - but yes I must get back to FI again some time.

We also used to fly out of Moorabbin to FI as it suited a couple my soft c**ked MEL based livestock buying mates - these flts also on a twin engine 8 or 10 seater. Before flying back to Moorabbin we would head down to Lady Barron morning of flt and the boys would buy a bag of live crays fresh off the boats to bring back to MEL..

One trip the weather cut up rough and return flt had to be cancelled and we couldn't get off the island for a day or so so the boys had to head down to the local slaughter house to fire up the copper to boil some water and cook their crays.

This last pic is taken from my room inside Whitemark Hotel - the local boys painted their own personal pedestrian crossing so they could safely cross to the TAB during peak hour in Whitemark - nothing like sense of humour in the bush huh?

Basically a developer proposed a structure higher than allowed by the local Planning Scheme, but it was recommended by the Council's planning people, under the discretionary provisions. The Council blocked it. Now the developer is threatening to appeal. The Council has folded as they have good grounds to believe that the appeal will win, and they will bear the costs, which they can't afford.

This reflects what I learned from someone on my local council some years ago. I asked why they voted for a proposal which I knew they were against. Their answer was: "If we block it just because we don't like it, they will appeal, and they will win and it will cost us $[big number]. Councillors have to follow the Planning Scheme and not their own likes and dislikes". I've voted for them ever since. But on my local council we still have Councillors who basically vote against every development, knowing that they will be in the minority and hence can indulge themselves and be seen as 'pure'
