Hi all

Back in April I booked a return flight to Europe with Finnair for travel in August, however at time I wasn't a member of any frequent flyer program. Since then I've joined QFF. As far as I can tell, the Finnair flights should be eligible to earn QFF points.

What's the best way to go about ensuring any points for this trip are credited to my account? Should I try to contact Finnair beforehand to add my FF number to the booking, can I do it at check-in, or should I just wait and then put in a claim through the Qantas site after I've travelled?

Hi CaptainPesmo

Welcome to AFF !

Yes Finnair is part of the One World Alliance.

Not sure if you can manage your booking online (didn't look), but if you can, just add your QFF number there. You can also make sure it's there when you check in.

You should always have the number linked to your booking before your fly, this becomes more important when you have status so you can access better benefits, privileges etc! But as you have just joined, Bronze doesn't get anything special. So go ahead and add it to the booking, or call up and get it added. Then you'll be able to see the booking on the QFF website when you login.

Just remember for status etc, your anniversary date started when you signed up for QFF so if you're planning on obtaining silver, or higher, you will need to make sure any flights are made before that anniversary date!

Have fun in Europe in a few months! :)

As far as I know, you can only claim flights that were up to flown thirty days prior to joining QFF.

I just tried to claim points from a flight taken 35 days ago for my inlaw and the claim was rejected as being out of the time frame or something like that.

From Qantas.com.au for existing members of the program:

Claim missing Qantas Frequent Flyer points for travel on eligible flights on Qantas and some Qantas partner airlines.

* Claim must be made within 12 months of travel
* Qantas flight claims take up to 3 working days to process
* Qantas partner flight claims take up to 14 working days to process
* Whether successful or not, all claims will be shown on your online Activity Statement
* No transaction fee

Have your boarding pass or travel documentation handy to enter your flight details, and keep the documentation until your claim has been processed.

and from https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyns/joinff for new members joining the program:

You can even earn points for eligible flights you've taken up to 30 days before the date of which you joined. Find out more about the benefits you can enjoy as a Frequent Flyer in about the program.

If you were already a member at the time you flew, you can claim up to a year later (I recently claimed points/SCs ~11 months after a flight).

If you are joining QFF retrospectively, after taking the flights, then the time limit for joining and claiming those flights is a lot less, proabably the 30 days quoted.

For the OP, just contact Finnair and ask them to insert the FF number into the booking.

Edit: Ahh, definitely the 30 days, as posted by NM!

I booked a return flight to Europe with Finnair for travel in August,

Given that you havent yet travelled, just call Finnair to add your number. All the stuff about claiming for flights before joining is a bit confusing and you havent yet flown.

Hmm. Is that a case of reading the thread heading and not the content of the post before replying? One starts and the rest follow. ;)

Sorry to revive this older thread, but I just wanted to thank everyone for their responses and also to share some info that may be useful to others:

Having decided that I'm too cheap to call the reservation line in Finland, I decided to wait until check-in to have my FF number added, or to put in a claim through the Qantas site after I travel.

I've done a bit more Googling though (the exciting things I do), and someone on another forum posted a solution which looks to have worked. I was able to log in to "Manage my booking" on the BA site and to add my QFF number there - it's now included when I view my booking.

Bit of a shame that the functionality isn't available directly through the Finnair site - as far as I can tell, the only thing you can do there is cancel the booking!
