I initially thought that these are sort of matching the new AirNZ TT product SYD-CHC launch fares where one can get a "Seat Only" fare from AUD160 return (18 Aug – 21 Sep and 12 Oct – 14 Dec, sale finishes TODAY).

Hoever, there is too much difference. Perhaps it's part of a longer term strategy.

Christchurch - Hot Deals - Flights - Hot Deals - Promotions - Air

Airpoints members can earn 60 SC's for these, (no Airpoints $).

and that Miles Accelerator needs to be opted-in each month.

Only if booked through phone or TA. Noting that:
Alternatively, purchase online and we will opt you in automatically.

Also FWIW, return fares are slightly cheaper if you book as two separate one ways, as is usually the case with NZ. eg MEL-AKL is $202 + $146 AUD = $348 AUD instead of $360AUD

Don't forget it's only 16k to upgrade from Economy to Business with these fares,

Looking at EF, it looks like there is a fare for an additional $22 which classes as flex (VOWAU1) which would allow upgrade for only 12,500 points. Prob worth $22 if there is I class and planning to upgrade

Also, ex AKL, there is a decent one way I fare to Sydney of AUD523 plus taxes for those wanting to purchase business class and AUD804 plus taxes for 1st class

And in addition to the 3,500 pt saving on the upgrade get and extra 850 Skywards pts/status pts each way as well.
