I was wondering if anyone has booked a JASA and traveled with an infant (< 2yr old by QFF definition).

1. I assume the baby (6 months old) does not require a ticket?)
2. Can i assume the baby can go in J? apparently a very quiet baby ;)
3. Do you have to call QFF after booking the JASA to notify them the baby is coming along?

Thanks :) - not had experience with this before.

It depends if there are any international sectors on your itin as infants need a ticket on international flights (10% of fare) whereas domestic itins they travel for no fare.

What is your routing?

Call the airline once you have done the booking so the infant details can be added.

Thanks ozbeachbabe,

So if its a Melb to lax via syd. So if its a JASA, how does the 10% work out for the baby? add 10% points once you call them?

You will have to pay tax's. I have a 11month old and we are traveling to London. It was $800 in tax and unfortunately you can't avoid it - that is you can't use points for it.

You can't do tickets for infants on points when they're paying 10% of the airfare (no seat). In the event of pax wanting to actually purchase a seat for their infant eg if 18 months old, it is still the same points as for an adult ticket.

I had to call QF res for something else but I asked them question what happens with infant tickets in your example.

They would be charged 10% of the return J class airfare plus the applicable taxes on top of that. At the moment the adult return J class airfare excluding taxes is MEL/LAX is AUD4153.00 so the cost of the infant fare is would be AUD416.00 return. This is based on the sale - fare basis I14SP.

They pointed out that the return fare is actually cheaper than the one way so even if you were flying one way it would be cheaper to pay for the return ticket but not use it.

Governments aren't shy about charging taxes even for infants not occupying a seat & I was told that to the USA, taxes for adults are approx AUD800.00 with infants charged approximately 75% of that so if you guestimate that taxes will be AUD600.00 with the airfare AUD416.00 you have a ballpark figure of AUD1,000.00.

I would try and pay for the infant ticket asap before the sale finishes so you can then go about pre-allocating your seating in the bassinet row.

Thanks very much for that. Will get onto it. Will give them a call as well tomorrow to book the infant leg i suppose.... not sure how to do that online or if even possible.

Thanks again - scheps :)

just called qf and was told, when booking with points, infant pays tax only.

Downside, i couldnt find a bassinet. ... ... :(.

on qf 107, whats 3e like? there is no 3d....

Ring QF and see if you can book a bassinet seat.

When little Miss Simo was able to go in a bassinet they where all taken so we purchased another seat so we could lay her down on the seat and we could have some respite from having to hold her the entire way.

Mind you our flight wasn't as long as your's and cost a lot less money.

Also make sure you book in early and not last minute either as a check in agent might bump you out of the seat if they don't realise you have an infant if QF call centre gets you one.

Did res mean when the adults are paying with points the infant only pays tax?

So did they actually issue the ticket for the taxes only?

All Pax will have to pay tax on points bookings. However you won't have to use your points for a ticket for your bub. Syd - London was 156k rtn pp and about $1100+ in tax. Bub was no points and $800 odd in tax.

yep tax only. saved 10% coz of points yay! :P

Just had to pick another flight with a bassinet, otherwise, might have been back to PE with two seats like what you did!

Even though an infant doesn't actually occupy a seat the checkin staff would still see the infant name as one of the passeners on that booking so if someone else asked for those seats when the CSA looked at who was sitting there it would show the names of the 2 adults and the infant and would hopefully leave them where they were.

It's not like a couple with a baby turn up to checkin & the CSA only realises they've got a baby then. That would only happen if the infant wasn't in the booking.

was looking at the seat map before, just wondering, whats in front of 3e? maybe an extra bassinet can go there :D

When Miss nearly 4 was only app 6 months we had booked a bassinet seat from PER and was told by call centre to book in on line so we would be guaranteed our seat.
