Flying JQ & AY to SVO

I'm due to fly to Europe in August/September and my first stop is Moscow, but I need to fly into SVO. I've searched fares and noticed that AY fly into SVO from HEL, and I flew with them last year and it was a good experience.

When I priced the J fares from MEL to SVO, the prices were over $10K, but if I flew out of SIN, it would only cost less than $4K. So I can get JQ Star Class to SIN for around $1K on promo, and this would give me 5-6 hours to kill in and around the airport, but that's ok considering I get the points and SC's, but save on the fare.

Are there any issues buying two separate fares like these? I presume I need to check-in again in SIN since the fares won't be linked, is this right? Any issues with buying the fare from SIN?

Thanks in advance!

Ben

If the JQ flight is delayed you'll be pretty buggered. Best to make the connection an overnight for safety. You also can't check through on JQ to AY, I don't think.

Why AY? Are you on a OneWorld RWT fare or something?

$10 K sounds like an awful lot to me - lots of other carriers can fly you from MEL to SVO for far less than that, like for example Air France/KLM (I would not be risking China Southern of course :-)) if you are not restricted to OneWorld carriers. Just punched in some random dates in Aug and got $5.6K return with Air France i

I'm sure the idea is for lounge access and status retainment in OneWorld, so flying anything else wouldn't be useful to the OP.

That said I'm using my iPhone so can't see what status they have, if any.

Yeah I want to fly OW. I think the reason the the high price, is because of the codeshare pricing with QF out of Australia. I did the same trip around the same time last year (except to FRA not SVO) with AY, and it cost just over $6K. There might yet be specials, but I'm not expecting it.

I'd really prefer not to stay the night in SIN, as I already have to fly out on my son's birthday and leaving the day before, would not be ideal. I don't have to book for a month or so probably, so maybe I'll wait to see if AY want any specials.

In regards to China Southern, I've flown them before and had no issues, but I really want the SC's.

I see - SCs are precious

just one more question then - do you really have to arrive at SVO? All other OW carriers would take you to DME which is just as good. You could probably fly JAL MEL-DME with only one stop as opposed to 2 stops (SIN and Helsinki), a bit quicker?

sorry just realised you can't as JAL does not fly out of MEL, so yes it would be a two stop journey for you anyway
