Hey knowledgeable ones!

After having got some really good advice last time when I needed some SCs to go from Gold to Platinum before my SCs expired, I'm hoping you guys can help me out again here.

My partner is about to start work in HK in about 2 weeks time on a 12 month stint. As I have to take forced leave from the 17th of December for 3 weeks anyway, I figured I'll take a flight up there to help her settle in, do some shopping, take in the sights as I've never been there.

Any recommendations for booking a flight there during that time? Should I just book through Qantas or are there better deals(SC-wise) if I book with a one-world partner or something like that? I keep seeing mentions of doing SC runs in Asia for cheap so was wondering if I could leverage that.

Also, I'll be flying out of Melb if that makes any difference

Very good value to HKG can be the QF R class fares. These are heavily discounted premium economy fares. They earn full economy SCs and a small cabin bonus. You can travel in relative comfort for a fraction more than flexible economy fares. They are not always available and may be a little scarce given the A380 situation at the moment. Also note premium economy is only available on 747-400 on that route and while the A380s have been grounded QF29/30 has been using A330 aircraft some days, so there may be a risk. But if you purchase a PE seat and its subbed for an A330 you will either be upgraded to J or downgraded to Y (well B actually) with a refund for the downgrade.

Would a WP on a Y ticket go up or down NM, cetris parabis given a switch to a 330?

I would fly Jet* to SIN in *class then to HKG. You can book it in 1 ticket but SIN-HKG is Y only so you end up paying more with no real benefit, assuming you get Y SC only for that leg.

You may want to book 1 way to HKG, then purchase a return to MEL if you intent to visit your parter within the next 12 months as HKG-MEL return in QF PE is quite cheap and chance of upgrade to J using points is extremely good.

Based on our experience (wife and I both WP) a couple of weeks ago - down. but we were given qantas vouchers and promised a refund (yet to see that though).
all in all not too bad given it is a relatively short flight.
